• Fair for Its Day: At the time the series came out, the LGBTQ+ of that time embraced its imperfect efforts to acknowledge diversity; for example, while Gene/Jean often receives the equivalent of homophobic and genderfluidity slurs from other characters, it is nearly always from villains and from characters depicted as obnoxious, with series hero Quark often defending Gene/Jean from such slurs even while admitting his own awkwardness on the matter. Similarly, while the Bettys were often eye candy, they were also shown to be respected second-in-command of the ship regardless their gender, something that did not occur on more serious television series until a decade or more later.
• Fridge Brilliance: Despite the fact that "telegram" is an archaic term, the general principle of keeping messages short to save on costs is one that will probably be with us for many centuries to come. Today, in the early 21st century, users of cell phones typically keep text messages as short as possible so as to fall under their calling plan's texting limit, to the point of using standard abbreviations. The cost per bit of sending a transmission across interstellar distances would have to be enormous.
• Hilarious in Hindsight: A later Star Trek series, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, would prominently feature a character named Quark.
• Special Effects Failure: Bordering on Doctor Who levels, though they do have Narm Charm.
• Spiritual Successor: With Buck Henry on board as creator, it was attempting to do for Star Trek what Get Smart had done for James Bond.
• Values Dissonance: The jokes at the Betty's (clones) and Gene/Jean's (a cyclical hermaphrodite whose biological sex swaps between male and female frequently, with an accompanying psychological switch between masculine and feminine; basically a gender-fluid coworker) expense are quite uncomfortable these days. Making such jokes in the workplace now would probably get Quark dragged in front of at least HR, if not a judge.
