YMMV / Prehistoric Kingdom

Go To

  • Epileptic Trees: Two of the animals set to debut in Early Access, according to a dev post, are the "God dinosaur" and a semiaquatic mammal. While the former is almost universally assumed to be Plateosaurus (which was referred to as "god dinosaur" on the game's discord channel), the semiaquatic mammal is currently an enigma. Popular guesses are Ambulocetus/Pakicetus, Castoroides, and Moeritherium. All three are fairly liked by the community for their designs, with the former two also being desired due to their small and (relatively) boring natures making them good candidates for mammal additions to the one-star list, which is otherwise dominated by dinosaurs.
  • Fandom Rivalry: A lukewarm one with some fans of Jurassic World: Evolution, both games being zoo simulators focusing mostly on dinosaurs, but PK focuses on scientific accuracy whereas JWE is more focused on Rule of Cool.
  • Friendly Fandoms:
    • Fans of Prehistoric Park were eager to declare Prehistoric Kingdom the spiritual sequel thanks to the return of Nigel Marven.
    • Fans of Saurian also tend to be on good terms with the PK community, what with both being independently-developed dinosaur games that strongly emphasize paleontological accuracy over Rule of Cool. Certainly helps that the dev teams of both games themselves have a fairly amicable relationship.
    • The relationship between Kingdom fans and those of Jurassic World: Evolution is decidedly mixed between this and Fandom Rivalry. Some vitriol gets thrown around over which game is better, with Kingdom fans pointing out it is more accurate and actually includes Cenozoic animals, while fans of Evolution will say it has a bigger roster and better animation. Expect angry remarks on both fronts. On the other hand, many fans of one are fans of the other; with prominent Youtubers and modders that once exclusively covered Evolution happily endorsing Kingdom for its merits. While the two games are both park builders, the detailing in how the parks are made and the animal behaviors therein do differ starkly and this contributes to the differing reactions.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Prior to the launch of Early Access, the devs confirmed there would be three skins for Tyrannosaurus, as well as a fourth skin representing Tarbosaurus. Around the time the game finally went into Early Access, a paper was written that suggested that Tyrannosaurus rex should actually be split into three seperate species — T. rex, T. regina, and T. imperator.
  • It's the Same, So It Sucks:
    • One of the few complaints the fandom has with the Early Access roster is the lack of small animals. Most of the creatures in-game are at least medium sized, making it difficult to add them to small parks that are just starting out and can't afford larger exhibits.
    • The lack of a one-star mammal is also a sore point for the community. One of the main differences between Prehistoric Kingdom and Jurassic World: Evolution is that the former has several prehistoric mammals among its roster, yet all of them are at least two stars, meaning you'll have to invest some time to unlock them for your park. This is especially pronounced in challenge mode, as playing on Hard means it is impossible to have a starting mammal.
  • Moe: Various small dinosaurs like Dryosaurus, Microraptor or Scelidosaurus and Leaellynasaura look very adorable.
  • Scrappy Mechanic: A few.
    • Fences cannot be contoured to line up with paths, which can make both creating exhibits and walkways more annoying that it needs to be.
    • Modular buildings mostly work fine, but adding doors to them can be an exercise in futility - not only are doors one of the parts that aren't able to use the grid system (which can make getting them properly rotated a hassle), they're also not sized to properly fit in doorframes, meaning you'll need a least some scaling adjustment to match up with said frames.
  • Spiritual Successor: A work centering on building a park featuring prehistoric life that is intended to portray said species realistically and features Nigel Marven in a key role? Comparisons to Prehistoric Park are inevitable.
  • Unexpected Character:
    • Scelidosaurus was a surprise character for Update 1.1, as it hadn't been in the original list of creatures scheduled for the game.
    • The Dev Logs for Update 9 caught a few fans off guard with the revelation that Carcharodontosaurus would be added in said update, while the Cave Lion would debut in Update 10, as both animals had been discarded from the game during early phases of development. When the release trailer for said update dropped, fans were given another shock in the form of Spinosaurus, which was subjected so often to anatomical changes due to many new discoveries that no one was sure if it would be added to the game.
    • When looking through the first volume of the artbook, players were shocked to find that Leaellynasaura was planned for the 2024 roster, as it was yet another creature that hadn't been giving any announcement as a planned animal. Even more surprising was that its concept art included several ingame renders, with the devs confirming that it was slated for release in Update 11.
