YMMV / Pipo De Clown

Go To

  • Archive Panic: This series has existed since the days of black-and-white television and there are over 600 episodes, with some of the older series episodes considered lost media.
  • Common Knowledge: Some viewers blame "political correctness" for why Klukkluk was removed from the 2003 movie. However, director Martin Lagestee himself denied this, stated that Klukkluk didn't appear because he was planned to be in the focus of the sequel movie Pipo & The Secret Of The Barkini Triangle (though development for that film fell through). Klukkluk would later appear in the musical, the 2017 series and various other media, confirming this.
  • Ethnic Scrappy: The show was never released outside the Netherlands, but the few Americans who know about it loathe Klukkluk the Native American. He was played a white guy in brownface. One of his catchphrases is also "Oud Indiaans spreekwoord zegge altijd..." ("An old Native American saying is..."), before saying something made up.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • "Sapperdeflap!". That one has actually become embedded in Dutch slang, used in politics and dictionaries.
    • "Dit is toch van de gekke!" Translation is also commonly said amongst Dutch elders.
    • Most of the Character Catchphrases, like "Peanut butter sandwich!" and "hold it, Mammaloe!" are some examples.
  • My Real Daddy: Ask anyone who grew up with the series who they associate Pipo with, and the answer will always be Cor Witschge.
  • Values Dissonance: While popular in the Netherlands, it featured a white man dressed as a Native American, speaking in childlike sentences. He was also portrayed as an idiot who couldn't speak Dutch right, spouts "Native American sayings" (which are actually made up on the spot), terrible at using a bow and an arrow, and from a tribe full of similar dumb savages. Nowadays this seems horribly racist.
