YMMV / Peter Grill and the Philosopher's Time

Go To

  • Broken Base: One that even the series brings up: whether or not it's even worth it for Peter to stay with Luvelia.
    • By all accounts Luvelia is kindhearted, but her extreme naivety regarding sex and her father's overprotective nature (and hatred for Peter) makes Peter's devotion seem like a lost cause. If in the event he does stay with her, he'd also have to deal with his sister's "no cheaters allowed" wrath if she ever catches wind of his Unwanted Harem. On the Luvelia side of the equation, some find it unfair that she's staying emotionally and physically pure for Peter while he's in a cycle of sexual harassment and constant guilt. Combine that with the fact that the narrative keeps them apart for chapters on end, and you have a section of readers calling for annulment.
    • On the other hand, it's not like Peter even wanted this to happen to him in the first place. It'd be unfair to paint him as a cheater when most of the sex he's had involved the girls either forcing themselves on him or Luvelia's father forcing situations on him to encourage cheating and severing ties with Luvelia herself. That he's emotionally faithful to Luvie despite all that speaks to some audiences honestly wanting them to hook up at the end and get away from all this craziness.
    • Additionally, Lucy’s yandere freak out is a comedically-magnified version of real-life Blaming the Victim, when she has an actual recording of Peter telling the girls to stop, and attacks him for “cheating.” He was only saved because they managed to fool her. So in addition to his other problems, he now has a crazed confessed murderer dogging his steps.
  • Catharsis Factor: Credit where it's due, there is at least some satisfaction to be had with seeing Luvelia finally stand up to her father after he shoots down her love for Peter one time too many. And ultimately run away with Peter at the end of the Dwarf Arc.
  • Fridge Horror: Even if Peter and Luvelia did get married, her complete obliviousness to sex would imply Peter would only be able to consummate their marriage by raping her.
    • Unless they abstained until he was able to guide her into learning about her body, then showing her how to enjoy self-pleasure, and finally ensuring that she voluntarily choose to have sex with him when she was emotionally ready.
  • Jerkass Woobie: While Piglette is a genuinely sweet woman who treasures the kindness Peter showed her, a life's worth of mistreatment at the hands of her own race (for being ugly by orc standards) means revenge is the first thing on her mind, leading Piglette to frequently aid or enable the rest of Peter's Unwanted Harem in their lowbrow quest to have him sire their children. Note that, up until the introduction of Gobuko, she was the closest thing the harem had to a Token Good Teammate and the only member to undoubtedly love Peter as a person.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Referring to the series as "I Don't Wanna Be Horny Anymore, I Wanna Be Happy: The Manga/Anime."
    • To a much lesser extent, crude jokes about the strength of Peter's Gag Penis, as it's able to briefly lift a table in Episode 2 (adapted from the manga's first volume) while the Alpacas sisters mess with his junk.
  • Ron the Death Eater: Although Luvelia is mostly shown as a pure and innocent girl, some viewers think she's too much trouble for Peter and would rather have her engagement annulled. Some even theorize that she's not as pure and innocent as she seems, or that she's even sleeping with male monsters behind Peter's back.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: For some viewers, the overwhelming selfishness of Peter's harem and his inability to stand up to them and their advances gets old fast. Not to mention the fact that the plot essentially boils down to him getting raped over and over for the sake of comedy and getting mocked for not doing anything about it.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Peter is hounded by an Unwanted Harem of girls who constantly try to churn his libido so he can give them strong children, and the mishaps he gets into aren't always his fault (like when Vegan curses him with a Raging Stiffie that won't go away until he has sex with her). However, it can still be hard to feel bad for him at times since he keeps cheating on Luvelia anyway due to being sexually frustrated. The writing tries to frame him as a Sympathetic Adulterer by showing that he feels guilty and regrets his actions, but eventually it just comes across as him feeling sorry for himself while constantly making the same mistakes and never being able to stand up to the harem and their advances.
  • Woolseyism: While the series' sense of humor doesn't appeal to everyone, one thing many viewers agree on is that the Crunchyroll subtitles' numerous euphemisms for sperm are both creative and hilarious.
