YMMV / Norwegian Wood

  • Fridge Horror: More like Fridge Sadness: it's easy to miss on an initial reading, but by the end of the novel, both Naoko and her sister have killed themselves. It's hard to imagine how their parents could go on after that.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Reiko's piano student basically sexually assaulted her, but as Reiko herself says, nobody was going to believe a beautiful, talented thirteen-year-old girl would try to seduce her thirty-year-old married piano teacher, let alone that Reiko didn't consent to it and had to slap her just to get her to stop.
  • Tear Jerker: The second half of the novel is pretty much one long string of them.
  • Woolseyism: The original English translation by Alfred Birnbaum changed Storm Trooper's name to "Kamikaze".
