YMMV / Newsboys

  • Broken Base: After Peter Furler's departure, there's a breed of fan that will tell you in no uncertain terms that it's not Newsboys anymore and that Michael Tait should "go back to dc Talk" (a group that's been defunct since the early 2000's).
  • Common Knowledge: Longterm fans (particularly those who were able to attend multiple concerts) have a tendency to think of the Newsboys as John James's band until Peter Furler "took over". The simple fact is that it was always Furler's band. On albums, James's heyday was during an era wherein few had ever heard of the group, and by the time they started selling in the millions with Not Ashamed and Going Public, Furler was already doing a majority of the lead vocals on the albums (though James still sang them live). The last three albums of the "John James era" are about 60-70% Furler's voice.
    • In the mid-2010’s, George Perdikis publicly revealed that he was now an atheist. The headlines at the time described him only as “the founder” or “founding member” of the Newsboys (you had to read the article to know it was Perdikis), and thus, coupled with John James’s revealed drug habit, some fans came to believe that John James had renounced his faith (despite his not technically being a founding member). Worse yet, as this was revealed after Peter Furler had left the group, some believed it was Furler who was now a professing atheist.
  • Cult Classic: One of the most popular bands in the Christian Rock genre; almost unheard of outside of it.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Anytime the lineup changes, most recently when frontman/songwriter Peter Furler decided to leave.
