YMMV / My Little Pony: Equestria Girls – Spring Breakdown

Go To

  • Angst? What Angst?: Rainbow Dash is trapped in quicksand with no hope of escape and, as far as she knows, no one is coming to rescue her or even knows she's here. She takes it remarkably well considering she's doomed.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Rainbow Dash is seen as this due to her more impulsive and hot headed nature. She's either seen as too unlikable for essentially forcing everyone to do what she wants to do with no consideration for how they feel, or she's still a likeable character who's just in over her head.
  • Broken Base: This is a divisive special for a few reasons:
    • It takes over halfway through the special to get to Equestria. One side finds it wasted potential due to focusing on needless subplots that amount to nothing. The other side doesn't mind it since it's at least entertaining.
    • Having no antagonist is either refreshing due to the Author's Saving Throw, or it's low stakes and boring.
  • Die for Our Ship: Naturally, Ragamuffin got targeted by the enormous Rarijack fanbase thanks to his Ship Tease with Rarity.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: This unnamed background human has become quite popular with the fandom, due to her unique design compared to the other characters.
  • Fanfic Fuel:
    • The very idea that there's more than one portal between Equestria and the human world. This could mean that other people/ponies have found these portals before.
    • Sunset has to use the portal to Equestria on the island in order to safely get her friends and all the passengers back to land. How each of her friends and people who didn't know about the existence of a land full of magical ponies react to the revelation and their new bodies is begging for exploration. Not to mention the reunion between Princess Twilight and the human world Flash Sentry, having not seen each other since Rainbow Rocks.
    • The full details of the dragon wedding Spike attended, or just what exactly is a dragon wedding in general. In fact, the idea that dragons in Equestria have weddings at all raises possibilities and eyebrows.
  • Fridge Brilliance: How could the Storm King have his own unique magic despite being established in the 2017 movie that the magic is mainly from the princesses? The magic is likely from the staff itself!!
  • I Knew It!: There was some debate as to whether Human Twilight would be a unicorn or an alicorn if she ever went to Equestria, though theories edged more towards the former than the latter. Spring Breakdown has Human Twilight's pony form shown as a unicorn, proving those theories right.
  • Les Yay:
    • Twilight says that she wouldn't trade Sunset for anything in any world, a sentiment that Sunset echoes. Twilight even puts her hand on top of Sunset's and smiles as she says this.
    • Rarity×Applejack shippers will note that Ragamuffin, who Rarity gets Ship Tease with, looks suspiciously like a male version of Applejack. It doesn't help that Applejack and Ragamuffin were standing next to each other when he meets the Rainbooms to emphasize how similar they look and the Rainbooms couldn't ignore the resemblance.
  • Nausea Fuel: Pinkie saves the chef who is trapped by her own cake by eating it. The cake in question is underwater and tangled with the chef's own leg. Hope Pinkie's stomach is strong enough for this...
  • Pandering to the Base: The trailer exaggerated the prominence of the human characters visiting Equestria, a long awaited development by fans.
  • Slow-Paced Beginning: The special is almost halfway over by the time it focuses on Sunset, Twilight, and Rainbow going to Equestria.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • The previous Dance Magic special concerned the Shadowbolts trying to raise money to hold Crystal Prep's spring dance on a yacht. Considering the premise of this special is the cast spending spring break on a yacht, this would have been a perfect opportunity to bring the Shadowbolts back, especially since Dance Magic gave them their Heel–Face Turn and we could see the two groups interact as friends.
    • Aside from a joke at the tail end of the special, the only humans of the Humane Seven to go to Equestria are Twilight and Rainbow; they only talk to Princess Twilight and Spike, pointedly avoiding other ponies on the way (including the Equestrian Rainbow Dash), and don't go anywhere but straight to Twilight's castle. With how much fans have been wanting to see the two groups of heroines finally meet, a lot more could have been done with the idea of them finally crossing over. We don't see the rest of the human cast seeing themselves as ponies for the first time (with the exception of Twilight and Rainbow Dash, as stated above) with the joke at the end. Were their reactions as hilarious as Twilight's was?
    • The only human characters we see as ponies are the ones who already have pony counterparts, presumably due to the animators not having enough time to make new models. What would pony versions of the Equestria Girls-exclusive characters like that toddler and her mother look like?
