YMMV / Murder By Choice

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Does the culprit of Chapter 1, Margot, actually care for Carla in a twisted way (i.e. a Yandere)? The game establishes Margot's main motivation to simply be power by stealing Project Genetica's files to then replicate the Genetica serum to live longer. However, it's not entirely established if Margot was faking her affection to Carla before being exposed to get Carla off her trail. Even after Margot gets exposed by Carla for being the culprit and gets stunned by Carla using the Admiral's stun gun to then get tied up after attempting to kill Carla herself, Margot still calls Carla "chérie" and appears genuinely hurt if Carla says she doesn't want to hear Margot say her name again or if Carla says Margot looks awful wearing yellow. Margot also still thinks herself to be Carla's friend and simply thinks herself to be Carla's rival (not enemy) if Carla says they're no longer friends. Margot's victims also happen to be the two people Carla openly dislikes the most out of all the characters. Could Margot have been partially motivated by Carla's opinion of the victims when killing them?
    • Turns out to not be what the writers intended, as seen in the Memory Story Murderer's Path, where the culprit openly despises interacting with Carla as an "LA girl". Unless you really want to argue the culprit falls in love with Carla over time or doesn't realize themselves how much they like Carla.
  • Spiritual Successor: Although the game is not advertised by Nordcurrent as such, it is practically a present-day version of Murder in the Alps.
    • The gameplay is the same besides the player's ability to make choices that shape how the story plays out. Both include features like hidden object scenes and puzzles that take up the entire screen, dialogue at the bottom, an inventory at the left, a map and diary at the top left (in Murder by Choice's case, this is all in Carla's phone), and an Energy system.
    • The protagonist of Murder by Choice, Carla Page, parallels the protagonist of Murder in the Alps, Anna Myers. Both are journalists who actively seek the truth and justice during their murder investigations and are not above snooping through people's stuff to find clues.
    • Chapter 1 heavily parallels the first chapter of Murder in the Alps, Deadly Snowstorm. Both take place at an establishment that gets isolated from the outside world due to intense weather. Both feature the owners of said establishment naming their work based on themselves (Ruben, from Murder by Choice, names his company "Navarro Industries", Otto, from Murder in the Alps, names his hotel "Hotel Roger") and being consistently the protagonists' most trusted allies despite hiding legally dubious secrets from the protagonists. Both begin with a murder that is initially suspected to be an accident before more murders occur. Both feature desired research into living longer (while Murder in the Alps has Professor Clark discover a recipe of an ancient Vedic drink called Soma that apparently grants immortality, Murder by Choice has Ruben actually scientifically develop a serum via Project Genetica to modify one's genes to prevent aging). Both feature culprits who work for a secretive power-hungry organization, are motivated to obtain such research into living longer, pretend to be the protagonists' allies, pretend to be scared by the murderers, pretend to be targeted by the murderer, spend a night with a male suspect in their rooms in order to incriminate them, and get exposed in a dining room.
