YMMV / Monkey

The Japanese version has:

  • Americans Hate Tingle: When Monkey was first shown on Chinese TV in the early 80s it had poor reception from audiences due to its artistic liberties from the original novel, resulting in the show being pulled after a few episodes. The silver lining is that it resulted in the creation of the more faithful 1986 series which is beloved by Chinese audiences.
  • Ho Yay:
    • When Goku is blinded by the Tiger King, Sanzo cures him by kissing his eyelids. And, in a later episode, when Goku sees Minmin (pretty much the only human woman he takes any serious romantic interest in throughout the entire series) for the first time, his very first thought is how much she looks like Sanzo.
    • In the third episode, Hakkai takes Goku's hand while they're asleep!
  • Tear Jerker: Ginkaku walking away in tears after her husband Kinkaku is trapped inside the magic melting gourd. Sanzo feels sorry for her.

The British version has:

  • Awesome Music: The opening theme: "Monkey Magic" is one of the most-remembered aspects of the show by those who watched it.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: A massive cult hit in Australia thanks to after-school screenings on 'The Afternoon Show' in the 80s.
  • Values Resonance: At the end of one episode, the narrator says, "To some of us, opinions are so precious that we will die for them". And then the internet came along...
