Americans Hate Tingle: When Monkey was first shown on Chinese TV in the early 80s it had poor reception from audiences due to its artistic liberties from the original novel, resulting in the show being pulled after a few episodes. The silver lining is that it resulted in the creation of the more faithful 1986 series which is beloved by Chinese audiences.
When Goku is blinded by the Tiger King, Sanzo cures him by kissing his eyelids. And, in a later episode, when Goku sees Minmin (pretty much the only human woman he takes any serious romantic interest in throughout the entire series) for the first time, his very first thought is how much she looks like Sanzo.
