YMMV / Memin Pinguin

Go To

  • Americans Hate Tingle: Or better said, Americans Hate Memín. He is seen as offensive in the United States due to his Blackface-Style Caricature-like design. In 2005, when the Mexican Postal Service announced they would publish a series of postal stamps with the image of Memín, many American civil rights groups noticed the character, and criticized both the stamps, the comics, and the Mexican society as a whole as being obscenely racist, to the point it caused a minor international incident between Mexico and USA. Mexico doesn't have much racial discrimination, since most of the discrimination there is more based in socioeconomic factors. Though, there has been times when Black Mexicans have been stopped at the streets by policemen due to them misidentifying them with illegal Cuban inmigrants, but that's a story for another day.
  • Fair for Its Day: The comic sometimes called out the segregation in issues from the 1960's, and spoke very harshly against racism ocasionally. Also, the characters who are racist towards Memin and Eufrosina are portrayed as ignorant or cruel.
  • Values Dissonance: Memín's design bears resemblance to a Blackface, and he is often depicted as many outdated stereotypes towards black people. It doesn't help that he resembles a monkey, and that some issues lampshaded this by having other characters thinking he's a talking monkey.
