YMMV / Mastermind: Strategist for Hire

Go To

  • Draco in Leather Pants: Many of the comments cheer on Izuku and justify his actions, acting as if his main goal is to fix a corrupt society, yet in the story, he commits horrible crimes and killings more for personal enjoyment than to bring about positive change, and he is perfectly fine with the deaths of innocent people.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Dabi's family bond with the League become this when it's revealed in canon that Dabi only cares for the League as a means to an end.
    • Dabi's family bond with Shouto become this when it's revealed in canon that Dabi's original vengeance plan against Endeavor involved killing his youngest brother.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: At one point, Principal Nedzu laments that it's a shame that Mastermind's skills and smarts are being used for villainy instead of heroism, and wishes he could have met Izuku before becoming a villain because Nedzu would have gladly taken him in as a student. Nedzu gets his wish in Cheat Code: Support Strategist, another Alternate Universe fanfic by the same author, when Izuku enrolls into UA’s Support Course as an intelligence and analytics student.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Izuku Midoriya, aka Mastermind, was once a Quirkless teenager with dreams of becoming a Pro Hero, but a combination of his dreams being crushed by All Might and discrimination against the Quirkless preventing him from getting a legitimate job ultimately drive him to become the title character, selling plans to other villains to make a living. His excellent analytical abilities and the high-quality plans he provides to villains via said abilities quickly make him into The Dreaded within months, becoming responsible for the deaths of hundreds, including more than a dozen Pro Heroes. He takes full advantage of his public life to throw off the police, letting him evade capture for more than two years. On top of that, he made plans in the event he does end up captured and incarcerated in Tartarus.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Invoked by Izuku, when he stabbed Glimmer, one of Uwabami's Sidekicks, to death to prove to himself he had become a real villain.
    • Endeavor caused Dabi's scars, attacking his son over and over until he nearly killed himself to stay alive.
  • Shocking Moments: All Might's death at the USJ was met by universal shock and disbelief.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • All Might's funeral and Tsukauchi's subsequent breakdown in Chapter 14.
    • A few weeks after Shoto Todoroki is kidnapped, his classmates assume he's dead and turn his desk into a memorial.
