YMMV / MGMT

Go To

  • Applicability: TikTok users have pointed out the many uses of "You know that if you hide, it doesn't go away" from "Little Dark Age", usually LGBT+ users showcasing themselves before and after fully embracing their identity.
  • Critical Dissonance: Critics have generally dismissed MGMT's stranger, more experimental second and third albums while the fandom loves them, a rather bizarre inversion of how this usually works.
  • Epic Riff:
    • The bass in "Electric Feel" is just pure sexiness.
    • The synth riffs from "Kids".
  • Fan Nickname: "Stylz Unlimited" for MGMT. Partly because it's name of the salon prominently displayed on the cover, and partly because it's a very plausible-sounding name for an MGMT album.
  • Faux Symbolism: There's Illuminati imagery inside the "Flash Delirium" video, seemingly thrown in for its own sake.
  • Memetic Mutation: The song "Little Dark Age" had been used as a background to an entity in decline (typically a country or empire), accompanied by a collage of images from more glorious times. Sometimes even accompanied by subtitles consisting of "How does it feel being in a dying _____?" "Euphoric".
  • Misaimed Fandom: Because of the above, the song has developed an association with white supremacists and their ilk, despite it being written to protest the victory of the Far Right presidential candidate Donald Trump in 2016.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The video for "Kids". Just when you think that the imagery revolving around a toddler getting menaced by monsters couldn't get any worse, everything suddenly becomes animated in a Christy Karacas-penned sequence that cannot be comprehended.
    • "Flash Delirium" is no better.
    • The music video for "When You Die" is said by actual drug users to be the most legitimate depiction of a DMT/LSD trip. That said, it's very bad trip using some very horrifying and surreal visuals.
  • Periphery Demographic: Oracular Spectacular is surprisingly popular among hip-hop artists. "Kids" and "Electric Feel" both became popular songs to sample, while MGMT themselves have collaborated with Kid Cudi and had a cancelled collaboration with Jay-Z.
  • Signature Song: "Kids", though "Time to Pretend" comes close. Same with "Electric Feel."
    • In more recent years, "Little Dark Age" has become this due to its heavy usage in memes.
  • Tear Jerker: "I Love You Too, Death." Though the lyrics are a bit obscure, they seem to be from the perspective of someone who knows he will be dead soon and is trying to make the most of the time he has with his significant other. The song is comprised of many elements that seem disparate at first, but coalesce subtly and beautifully toward the middle, which just adds to the bittersweet feeling.
    • "When You Die" is arguably this, it just has such a melancholy edge to it.
  • Vindicated by History: The reception to Congratulations is far less divided than it was when it was first released; it is generally considered to be the band's most underrated album.
  • Win Back the Crowd: After following their successful debut with two more experimental albums that received mixed reactions, the more melodic approach they've taken on Little Dark Age has been much more well received by critics and fans alike.
