Trivia / MGMT

Go To

  • Black Sheep Hit: Their three big hits are "Kids", "Time to Pretend" and "Electric Feel", electro-pop tunes that sound little like their other, more experimental stuff. "Kids", in particular, was originally written as an attempt to write 'the most stereotypical pop song" they could write. The band themselves don't seem to mind, although they've made it clear they won't be making songs like those again.
  • Channel Hop: An interesting case that occurred within a single album. The band were originally signed to RED Ink Records, a small-scale imprint founded by Sony Music and RED Distribution, and released Oracular Spectacular through them. When the album proved to be a cult hit, in part due to its aggressive advance promotion, the band were moved over to Sony's main label, Columbia Records, who gave the record a wider release. The band would continue to put out subsequent material through Columbia until signing with Mom + Pop in 2023.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: Most of Little Dark Age was done before Donald Trump's election, but MGMT changed a lot of the lyrics to some songs to reflect the said change in mood. This is most notable in songs like "Hand It Over" and "Little Dark Age".
  • The Shelf of Movie Languishment: 11•11•11, a live album of their 11/11/2011 performance at the Guggenheim Museum, was released on 11/11/2022, the 11th anniversary of it.
  • Trolling Creator: The band members admitted that very few of the things they said and did while promoting Oracular Spectacular were intended to be taken seriously. Feeling like they'd end up misinterpreted, they avoided this route while touring for Congratulations.
