• Jerkass Woobie: Zampanò is out-and-out bastard, but we get hints that he's suffered some incredible adversity in his life. And of course, you can't help but feel sorry for the guy at the end.
• The Woobie: Gelsomina is one of the classic examples in film history. The contrast between her wide-eyed innocence and the hell she goes through can be hard to watch at times. She's even regarded as one in-universe, with the other circus performers and the nuns taking pity on her.
• Woolseyism: Some English-speaking viewers prefer the original English dub to the subtitled version, since Anthony Quinn and Richard Basehart dubbed their own voices.
