YMMV / Kimbra

Go To

  • Broken Base: The Golden Echo is her most controversial album among fans, while reception to Vows is unanimously good and reception to Primal Heart is very good. Fans who dislike it feel it's where she sold out and especially hate the song "90s Music" (see They Changed It, Now It Sucks!). Others think all her albums are good and they all have good critical reception.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Broke out big as the guest singer on Gotye's massive hit "Somebody That I Used to Know" (and for which some critics would say stole the show completely).
    • The two female mimes from the "Miracle" video attracted a lot of attention in the comment section on YouTube who liked them and wanted to know who they were.
  • Friendly Fandoms:
    • According to Spotify and Tumblr, fans of her tend to like Janelle MonĂ¡e, which makes sense since they're friends and once toured together.
    • One might think Kimbra fans would have a rivalry with fans of Lorde since they're both indie pop women singers from New Zealand, but Lorde is better known and her albums have sold much more. There is no animosity though and Kimbra speaks highly of Lorde's music. They also collaborated on a song for charity.
    • Her fan wiki is linked to the wiki for Canadian electropop singer Allie X.
  • Memetic Hair: Her signature bangs, which she has always had regardless of how long her hair is.
    • Once she posted a picture with her hair tied back with the caption "Did a photoshoot for @remixmagazine with no bangs today. Woh. #branchingout".
    • She once got a Kimbra cake pop as a gift, clearly recognizable because of its black hair with bangs and red lips. She found this amusing if a little disconcerting since it meant eating herself.
  • Memetic Mutation: "Settle Down" has become a bit of a meme with fans quoting the scat singing and the wackier lyrics from it, like the verse about having a child named Nebraska.
  • Signature Song: "Cameo Lover" or "Settle Down".
  • Song Association: Some fans first came across her song "Good Intent" because of its re-recording for The Sims 3.
  • Tear Jerker: "Withdraw", "Version of Me" and "Everybody Knows" (especially the disturbing video of the remix).
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Most fans like the experimentation she has done on each album but some dislike her new musical direction from The Golden Echo onward which has been more and more electronic with less jazz and blues influences, and prefer her original sound.
