YMMV / Katarina Waters

Go To

  • Americans Hate Tingle: Diva Dirt didn't enjoy her feud with Mickie James, viewing the matches as lacklustre. Other wrestling critics seemed to enjoy them. Diva Dirt didn't start warming to Katie Lea until she was moved to ECW.
  • Badass Decay: Began in TNA as a kind of indomitable monster. Then she was pinned after plain old roll up from diminutive just barely above jobber status Rosita, for well beyond a three count. Incidentally, she'd spend quite some time antagonizing Rosita in Family Wrestling Entertainment.
  • Best Known for the Fanservice: In terms of her mainstream storylines, she is best remembered for the Incest Subtext angle between her and Paul Burchill, or else the lesbian subtext between her and Angelina Love in TNA.
  • Broken Base:
    • The controversial Brother–Sister Incest storyline she and Paul Burchill had in 2008. Half the base found the idea repulsive, especially with the backstage rumour that this was Vince McMahon's own personal fantasy. Others felt it had potential to be interesting, since it was ambiguous enough, and at least they weren't related in real life. Katarina herself felt it had potential.
    • The 'Winter' persona she showed up with in TNA. Some people thought a supernatural character implied to have magic powers was just too ridiculous, while others felt the Magic Realism angle they went with was at least something interesting.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Her musing on eating Mickie James in TNA? Nothing has driven more people toward cannibalism than harsh winters!
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Her Reincarnation Romance shtick with Angelina Love in TNA bears strange similarity to Hawkman and Hawkgirl from DC Comics, except this is a villainous version with alternative orientationsnote . Years later, Hawkman and Hawkgirl appear in the shows of the Arrowverse, introduced through Arrow and The Flash to join the main cast of Legends of Tomorrow.
    • On a related note, one of Matt Striker's nicknames for her in WWE was the Scarlet Witch, a Marvel Comics character. So WWE nicknamed her after a Marvel staple while TNA gave her the evil version of a DC character story.
  • Hollywood Pudgy: She joked that she didn't like her weight in WWE, and that she was probably released for that reason.
  • Older Than They Think: A Diva billed from England, with Raven Hair, Ivory Skin, rather aggressive and out to hurt people, and with a dark Gothic persona that sets her apart from Girly Girls...wait, we're not talking about Paige? Both even had similar white streaks in their hairstyles at different points in their careers.
  • Ron the Death Eater
    • Okay, their mother was present, but otherwise it's hard to see the Bellas as sympathetic from a narrative perspective when Burchill and Hall joined forces to defeat them. Unfortunately, narrative sense is overridden by crowd response in pro wrestling and they were booed against the twins.
    • Family Wrestling Entertainment openly acknowledged the fact the crowds turned against her in favor of nominal heels Maria Kanellis and Ivelisse Vélez.
  • The Scrappy
    • In OVW, though she won people over through sheer persistence and surprisingly good matches.
    • Her and Paul on Raw, after the latter's popular pirate gimmick was scrapped in favor of what many felt had way too much resemblance to an incest angle (Paul and Katie were lovers in OVW, so making them brother and sister on Raw...), as well as wrecking the push of Mr. Kennedy and starting an unpopular John Cena/Mickie James She's Not My Girlfriend angle. Again, they eventually won people over by consistently putting on good matches but may have done so too little too late for management's tastesnote , since they were shipped to WWECW and then released.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • It's pretty much all but stated directly that Katie Lea was about to get a major Career Resurrection right before she was released in 2010. The creative team were planning to move her to Smackdown in the draft, and Beth Phoenix had just won the Women's Championship in a hardcore match, and the two had feuded in OVW and had the first women's Ladder Match. As they'd already transitioned LayCool to feud with Kelly Kelly instead, it seems as though Katie Lea would have been the Glamazon's next opponent.
    • Following on from the above, when Beth Phoenix suddenly went down with a torn ACL, it left Smackdown depleted of another talent, and LayCool had to be put over again. But with their Alpha Bitch personas, and Katie Lea's 'Beautiful Nightmare' gimmick, she would have made a good contrast. She could have turned face and feuded with them, which also would have made for some interesting storylines with her and Layla both being British (although Katarina Waters is German, Katie Lea was billed from Chelsea, which is where Layla is actually from too).
    • A storyline starts in TNA where she drugs Angelina Love into siding with her against Velvet Sky, effectively breaking up the big stable of The Beautiful People. Velvet is then suddenly groomed to become a top Face — including getting to main event Impact in a match against Winter and Angelina, with top talents Jeff Jarrett and Kurt Angle involved. Winter then becomes Knockouts Champion, doing so by defeating the other top babyface, Mickie James. Bound For Glory — TNA's biggest event of the year — was coming up, and would have been the perfect setting for a big Winter vs. Velvet match, to capitalize on their storyline and give Velvet a big title win. Instead Winter loses the title back to Mickie two weeks later — and then wins it back in the exact same way. Then they turn her title match into a four-way where the main focus is on Velvet's heat with Karen Jarrett, completely demoting Winter to extra and ignoring any of her history with Velvet.
