• Big-Lipped Alligator Moment:
  • According to Word of God, any and all fourth-wall breaks. Within the story's continuity, Gamzee doesn't "actually" tell to the readers what to expect in the following chapters, and when someone says a line like "...from chapter __," that part wasn't really said. These have greatly diminished as the story goes on.
  • John's head morphing into Fred's from Scooby Doo in chapter 3. It's supposedly done in an attempt to make it more like Family Guy, but it's just... odd. Lampshaded by the narrator. "This isn't canon by the way."
  • Chapter 1 has Dirk randomly breaking character and talking without any errors (especially noticable here, as the first season is now considerably more typo-filled than the others by virtue of the Great Typo Cleanup deciding to live up to its name more in the later seasons) to make an advert for Family Guy.
• Harsher in Hindsight: If you read chapter 14 last, John's messages turn from reassuring to Stealth Insults at Dave and Jade.
• Hilarious in Hindsight:
  • Chapter 4 ends with John ranting about the series of updates where his canon self is... also ranting, instead of the comic showing the other pre-scratch trolls. The very next update in Homestuck after chapter 4 was published was the second part of the walkaround introducing more of said characters.
  • Pretty much everything about Damara in the first four chapters was this after her actual introduction in the comic, especially catching Scratch doing a crime and trying to get him arrested for it. The crime in question? Marajuana use.
