YMMV / Hello Kitty's Furry Tale Theater

Go To

  • Fridge Horror: While the use of fleas is understandable and has the usual cartoony gag of making characters itch, it's still a bit unsettling to see hordes of the little bloodsuckers so casually deployed as a theater prop.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The more timid personality My Melody has in this cartoon is pretty similar to Little Forest Fellow (nicknamed "Melo") a character Sanrio would make later on who's also My Melody's cousin.
  • Ho Yay: There's some unintentional undertones in "Catula" if you know the original story, considering how Dracula is also supposed to be a seducer and Catula's intended victims are still girls. Albeit we obviously don't see it...then it'd be another trope, also the phrase "I want to drink their milk" would sound a little wild if to say Kitty and Melody were older.
  • Older Than They Think: American Hello Kitty and Sanrio fans believe this show marked the animation debut of Hello Kitty and My Melody. In reality, Hello Kitty's actual animation debut was in the 1981 Stop Motion animated short Hello Kitty and Mimmy's New Umbrella where she co-starred with her sister Mimmy. During that same period, she made a non-speaking background cameo appearance in the 1981 film The Fantastic Adventures of Unico (based on Osamu Tezuka's Unico series) during Katy's musical number. Hello Kitty's actual second animated appearance was during the climax of A Journey Through Fairy Land from 1985, which marked the animation debut of My Melody and Tuxedo Sam and Sanrio Animation's final animated movie.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Kitty was played by a young Tara Strong in her first voice acting role.
  • Unconventional Learning Experience: A few behind-the-scenes tidbits on how plays are staged slip into the show, like Grandpa Kitty demonstrating how to make prop food in one episode.
