  • Anvilicious: This is a Bloodworth-Thomason production. Given the couple's apparent need to express their political opinions in all their shows, this comes with the territory.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: There's an episode where a mix-up at a doctor's office causes Ritter's character to think that he might die suddenly from a previously unknown illness. Ouch.
  • Retroactive Recognition:
    • Billy Bob Thornton was a little-known working actor in the early stages of his career when he was on this show. He'd make a splash a few years later with Sling Blade.
    • This show is Clark Duke's first professional credit.
  • Unintentional Period Piece:
    • The series is very much a product of the 1990's with the transition from the Republican George H. W. Bush to Democrat Bill Clinton being remarked upon.
    • Georgie Ann smokes like a chimney in government offices and in front of John's children. John finds the habit disgusting and urges her to quit but only really expresses annoyance at her tendency to use the nearest cup available as an ashtray.
  • Values Dissonance: John says that he's accepting of homosexuals but speaks out against bisexuals, saying that they should just choose one gender to be attracted to. Since then, the general public has gained a better understanding of sexual attraction and that it's not a simple matter of choice.
