YMMV / Guilty Gear X

Go To

  • Franchise Original Sin: While -STRIVE- faced some criticism for overhauling character movesets from the previous entries, it was actually this game that first visited the concept of reinterpreting character playstyles. It's just that characters' movesets from this game effectively became their de facto base moveset for over two decades until -STRIVE- changed them again, and at the point when it released X was only the second game in the series, so there was room to experiment.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Dr. Baldhead's new Faust identity introduced in this game proved to be much, much more popular than Baldhead ever was, with Faust winning over much of the fandom due to his insanely goofy personality and fighting style while still remaining a tragic and meaningful character underneath it all. As such, the character would remain "Faust" in Guilty Gear -STRIVE- even after discarding that persona after redeeming himself from his past mistakes.
  • Gameplay Derailment: While Faultless Defense Cancels are incredibly difficult to do consistently, and actually getting anything out of them is even harder, mastering them allows you to get practically all of the benefits of a Roman Cancel while only requiring a small amount of Tension and the ability to combo a high-hitstun normal into a Sweep. This gives most of the cast access to stun combos and insane pressure, with many positions on tier lists being determined by how well any given character could use it to their advantage.
  • Porting Disaster: Advance Edition. While it's impressive that a game like Guilty Gear X was able to be squeezed into a Game Boy Advance cartridge, it's incredibly clear that some sacrifices had to be made — the sound, especially the music, was compressed within an inch of its life, and the sprites lost a lot of detail, due to being shrunken down to fit on the tiny screen. It also has some technical issues, such as slowdown during fights, and an AI that's borderline non-functional even on the highest difficulty setting.
