YMMV / Gamera: Guardian of the Universe

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Kow Otani's soundtrack, and also Bakufu Slump's song, "Myth", which plays over the end credits. "Gamera Always Wins" as well.
  • Growing the Beard: This is the film that began the trilogy credited with turning Gamera from being a joke and poor man's Godzilla, into a legitimate rival for the Big G and genuinely great cinema.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Hajime Isayama, the creator of Attack on Titan, stated that he was influenced by the Gyaos from Gamera: Guardian Of The Universe when creating the titular man-eaters of the manga. 20 years later, Shinji Higuchi, who oversaw the special effects for Gamera the Guardian of the Universe, directed a live action adaptation of the manga.
  • Narm Charm: The puppets used to portray the Gyaos hatchlings are goofy looking and not particularly convincing, but are always fun to watch, especially when they're shown eating meat.
  • Signature Scene: The Super Gyaos nesting on top of the ruined Tokyo Tower as the sun sets.
  • Special Effects Failure: The effects are generally impressive for the time, and the suits look great — but it's very obvious that the Gyaos in the flying scenes is an unmoving model, as it almost never flaps its wings. Particularly noticeable in the final battle, where it and Gamera take turns chasing each other through Tokyo; Gyaos can easily keep up with Gamera without its wings ever moving.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: Much higher in story and production quality than the Showa sequels before it, although considering the Gamera film directly preceding this one is Gamera: Super Monster, it's not exactly a high bar to clear; it's more surprising Gamera even got a sequel after that one. Even still, the trilogy that spawned from it is often considered a milestone and gold standard of the genre.
  • Ugly Cute: Gamera, from certain angles.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: The model sets are incredibly detailed, moreso than the Godzilla films coming out at the time. The suits used for Gamera and the adult Gyaos also look great.
