YMMV / Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash

Go To

  • Complete Monster: Freddy Krueger is the same sadistic child-murdering monster he is in the films, and more. Following the events of the film, Freddy continues his spree of evil by once again manipulating Jason Voorhees into finding the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis to grant him reality-warping powers before sending the Deadites against Jason when he turns against him. He takes things further in The Nightmare Warriors, where upon his return, Freddy takes control of the Deadite army, placing Jason as general. At Freddy's behest, Jason and the Deadites leave death and destruction throughout Washington, where Freddy takes control of the White House where he reveals his plan for "No Child Left Alive" and the carnage he plans on spreading across the world. Revealing himself to be in an incestuous relationship with his daughter Kathryn, possibly due to brainwashing, when she fights with Jason, Freddy admits he plans to kill her when they are finished. Freddy possesses Stephanie to seduce and abduct Jacob, before encouraging Stephanie to kill as a Voorhees. Upon Jason's death, Freddy absorbs his soul as well before boasting himself as a "Dream God". Now desiring power and domination in addition to his bloodlust, Freddy takes his evil from the films to a more grandiose level.
  • Continuity Lock-Out: The comic rather blatantly expects the reader to have seen all of the Evil Dead, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th films that had been released at that point. This is especially apparent in the Nightmare Warriors follow-up, which features many returning characters from the Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th movies while their experiences with and connections to Freddy and Jason are given passing mentions at the most.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Most fans don't really care for "Nightmare Warriors" feeling it disrespects both Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th franchises history by needlessly killing off most fan favorites from the movies with little to no reason other then shock value. Turning Maggie evil likewise just felt pointless since it goes against everything of her character from "Freddy's Dead" (Where she never exhibited any behavior of this. If anything she hated her father because he killed her mother along with killing near all her friends), comes right out of the blue with no buildup to it and nothing comes from it as she gets killed off unceremoniously. With many fans claiming it felt more like a mean spirited Take That! to the movie just because it's the least popular of the franchise. There's also Jason basiclly serving as a henchman role to Freddy for no real reason especially since it's, y'know, suppose to be a versus title. The fact it reduces Ash and the Deadites role in the story likewise doesn't help either, with the Necronomecon just being a Plot Coupon at best to revive Freddy and be used as his own army.
    • On the other hand, its Grand Finale status has been accepted by a lot of fans since it means a huge number of old favorites knocked off in Sudden Sequel Death Syndrome are restored, including Nancy Thompson. In that respects, it works as a great send off to an entirety continuity.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • A hot blonde named Bree in midriff-baring outfits who has sex with someone at Crystal Lake, then shortly afterwards has a freak out upon realizing Jason's on a killing spree and gets caught by Jason a bit later. Is this Freddy Vs. Jason vs. Ash or Friday the 13th (2009)?
    • Also Ash having a young Hispanic man and action girl from his workplace among his sidekicks, in light of Ash vs. Evil Dead.
  • So Okay, It's Average: It's agreed that it probably would've been better as a film than as a comic.
  • Squick:
    • Plenty of it, especially in the first one. Like in the first issue when they showed Freddy fucking Jason's mom!
    • Let's not forget Freddy making it to second base WITH HIS OWN DAUGHTER! post Faceā€“Heel Turn.
    • Freddy again reminds us that he's a total sexual deviant by taking over Stephanie's body and attempting to seduce Jacob!. Really, we shouldn't be surprised by this given that this isn't the first time Freddy's done this...
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
    • Lori and Will are introduced early in the first issue... and are killed quickly. Lori could have easily filled a different role in place of Caroline, who has little to no character in the story. Even her becoming Freddy's lover through possible brainwashing instead of Freddy's own daughter would have been something.
    • Of the "Nightmare Warriors", Jessica, Steven, Renee, and Neil are all particularly wasted. The former two are unceremoniously killed off in the beginning, Jessica having died off screen, and Steven being killed by Jason. The latter two are both killed by Freddy and Maggie, only for Neil to randomly show up alive at the end so someone can read from the Necronomicon.
    • Despite being two of the title characters, Ash and Jason are severely shafted in favor of Freddy.
      • Jason is made into The Dragon to Freddy for most of the comic, and by time he and Freddy start fighting again, he's largely just left to be Tommy Jarvis' personal enemy.
      • Ash is treated no more importantly than any of the other Nightmare Warriors, and while he's the one to take charge of Alice, Tina, and Stephanie, the role of The Hero falls more on Tommy and Jacob, Ash feeling more like The Lancer to the two of them.
