  • Catharsis Factor: Xander is such a dickhead before his Character Development that seeing him splashed in mud — knocked down by a cabbage, of all things — is incredibly satisfying.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Mang Bangky is considered to be the one of the most well-beloved character in the series aside from the main characters.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Alex beating up Bettina is not depicted as a good thing, but he’s provided a handy Freudian Excuse just a few scenes following the Domestic Abuse and eventually “becomes a good father.” This is tough to stomach after the audience is treated to the sight of a distressed wife running away from a repeatedly violent husband, only for him to trap her with him in an isolated room so he can leave her bruised and bloody. Although ABS-CBN doesn’t have the best track record in terms of narrative consequences for abuse, it’s worth noting that a lot of other bad parents who get redeemed in their programs (e.g. Jaime Manansala in Got to Believe) are not chronic wife-beaters.
  • Values Dissonance: Neither Soberano nor Gil are white people, but as mixed POC they have pale skin. Here, they’re given glaringly evident fake tans (especially in the case of Gil; Liza Soberano was actually already pretty tan). It’s not that bad in this series, but gets uncomfortable in the context of the duo later starring in Bagani where their fake tans go even deeper and they, mestizos, are meant to represent important figures from precolonial Philippines. Where as this would be controversial in the West as a case of Yellow Face, this was not at all seen as controversial among the predominantly Austronesian Filipino natives. Simply because the adoration for light skin in Filipino culture particularly in the entertainment industry means people from the country often turn a blind eye to inaccurate physical representations of the native population in historical times. In other words physical beauty and the pale skin that comes with it in the ideals of Philippines plays a far larger role than historical accuracy and accurate representation in the country like in the West.
