  • Broken Base: The movie adaptation changes the time period to be the late 50s/early 60s adding in more of a culture clash subtext with the Loski family. The ending similarly ends on a more definitive note rather than the more ambiguous ending from the book. Naturally, both massive changes led massive debate over whether the loose-adaptation honored the source material or not.
  • Cry for the Devil: For all that Bryce's father is a bastard, the scene at the dinner table, where we realize that he lost a part of himself when he quit music manages to make you sympathize with him.
  • Toy Ship: Bryce and Juli, prior to them finishing eighth grade.
  • Values Dissonance: The book, (originally published in 2001) describes Juli’s low functioning and low IQ Uncle David as retarded. Since Rosa’s Law was passed in 2010, using the word ‘retarded’ to describe the intellectually impaired in educational, legal, or medical settings is illegal in the United States. Using the word ‘retarded’ to describe the intellectually impaired is also seldom used in polite conversation.
