YMMV / Fire Over England

Go To

  • Anvilicious: "Madam, in Spain they herd souls as we herd cattle. All men must be of one pattern and one blood. Spain is the prison of all freedom. Spain is horror. Spain is—"
  • Designated Hero: Some viewers may find it hard to warm up to Michael, with his temperamental outbursts and outrageous mistreatment of Elena, including his shameless manipulation of her feelings for England's political advantage.
  • Moment of Awesome: Goes to, of all people, King Philip, when he deduces that Michael is an English spy, and has him sent off to prison.
  • Narm:
    • Spaniards and Pan-Hispanists might have a hard time taking seriously much of the film due to the copious amounts of Spanish Black Legend thrown in, but the worst and most historically nonsensical, the claim about "one blood" referenced above, might be especially funny for a Latin American.
    • The previous reference is most likely due to the limpieza de sangre rules of The Spanish Inquisition, which to the Jewish Alexander Korda, the producer of the film, would have formed an easy analogue to the then current Nuremberg Laws, but the comparison, if caught by the viewer, might only dig it deeper — Spain at the period was actually considered too Jew-friendly by other European countries due to their high presence of Jews converted to Christianity, which is why the inquisition existed in the first place.
  • Strawman Has a Point: The film's demonization of Spain can come off as really beating one on the head with it, but when one realizes that the intention of the film's creators wasn't to demonize Spain, but to use it as a stand-in for Nazi Germany, it makes their intentions more sympathetic and understandable (still less so to Spanish viewers, naturally).
  • Values Dissonance: The film's straightforward English Jingoism and more than mild flavour of anti-Hispanicism and anti-Catholicism may cause a few qualms among sensitive viewers.
