YMMV / Everything is Fine

Go To

  • Alas, Poor Villain: Bob and Linda, even after selling out Charlie and turning on Maggie. Being Unpersoned, Forced to Watch as their children commit suicide, and likely being burned alive in their home is enough to make people feel bad for them.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • How aware are Sam and Maggie? For the most part they're just as painfully oblivious to negative things as their friends and neighbors, but the comic has moments where it's implied they're just playing along, such as Sam feeding a homeless person by giving him Winston's dead body, all the while pretending he's taking Winston for a walk. It's also heavily implied that stepping out of the happy line will have dire consequences in this neighborhood.
    • Are Bob and Linda Affably Evil or just genuinely trying to survive? Their subliminal jabs against Maggie for her choice of clothing in Had to be There suggests they're all on board with following the rules and look down on those who don't. But Friends for Dinner has them offering Sam, Maggie and Charlie a sort of alliance that could end with them in better circumstances. Both of them seem complicit in reporting Charlie to the police and getting him set to red status, but Linda in particular comes across as overzealous and maybe even malicious when she chooses to report Maggie and Sam too, despite Bob pointing out that they already have their ticket out of town and that it's unnecessary to report anyone else.
    • What about the rebellion? Are they as evil as the government, or do they actually have a good cause?
  • Crosses the Line Twice: The whole Winston-situation is already upsetting, what with Sam and Maggie basically pampering a corpse. And then Mom's Spaghetti comes along and his body is used by Sam to feed a homeless man.
  • Fridge Horror:
    • When Maggie kills Tom with a hammer, he sprays green fluid in addition to red blood. Also, you can clearly see his brain. And when Judy meets Charlie in the factory, his ripped helmet shows his brain, implying their brains are always underneath their helmets without a skull. So what's underneath those cat helmets?
    • In the last few episodes of Season 1, it's revealed that the government is propping up the system by basically holding everyone's children hostage, and forcing them to commit suicide if their parents are branded as red-status. The Fridge Horror from this reveal alone is plentiful - how are they being treated? What happens if a child's parents die without ever going red? And how did the government manage to get ahold of everybody's kids in the first place?
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • When Bob and Linda turn Charlie in for turning his basement into a faraday cage.
    • Later on, Linda decides to turn in Maggie as well, despite them already having gotten a spot at Lakeview. Even Bob is taken aback by it.
  • Nausea Fuel:
    • Just... everything about Winston. Up to and including his last "walk".
    • Officer Tom’s death scene and corpse are also a pretty good contender, what with all the blood, brains and green...stuff smeared all over his cracked helmet.
