YMMV / Doctor Who S31 E3 "Victory of the Daleks"

Go To

  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • The new Daleks exterminating the last three remaining Time War-era Daleks was no doubt intended as a statement that this new Dalek design was here to stay. As it turned out, they were never again used as the primary antagonists of any story; after small appearances in "The Pandorica Opens"/The Big Bang", "The Wedding of River Song", and "Asylum of the Daleks", they were effectively swept under the rug and the Time War design brought back as the main design. The newer ones continued to appear until the end of Matt Smith's tenure as Doctor, but only filling out Dalek crowd scenes, and were jettisoned altogether when Peter Capaldi took over from Smith.
    • Matt Smith would later star in The Crown, which also featured Winston Churchill.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: The biggest criticism the episode received (in addition to the new Daleks design, of course) is that the plot is a blatant recycling of "The Power of the Daleks".
  • Memetic Mutation:
  • Never Live It Down: Even if this had been a better-written story, it was never going to get out of the shadow of what a colossal misfire the New Dalek Paradigm turned out to be in execution.
  • Replacement Scrappy: Replacing the near-universally beloved Time War Dalek design was always going to be a tall order no matter what, but the New Dalek Paradigm was hated by fans and casual viewers alike, for its garish colour scheme, ugly shape and generally cheap, plasticky appearance. The Paradigm even drew the ire of the show's own staff, as their radically different proportions made them incredibly uncomfortable to operate even by Dalek standards. Not surprisingly, the change didn't stick, and two seasons later the Time War design was brought back.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • Most fans seem to agree that had the New Dalek Paradigm not been such a huge design misfire, and had the story been spread out over two episodes, it could have been a classic. Heck, it could probably have worked even as a single episode if they'd just left the Dalek design alone.
    • Diamanda Hagan came up with a better idea how the episode's core premise could be used to make a far deeper and morally complex story: Churchill is aware of how evil the Daleks are, but doesn't care as long as they can help him win the war. So the Doctor is forced to team up with a German agent to stop them, putting Amy in quite a tight spot, as she doesn't know how bad the Daleks are, but does know how bad the Nazis are.
