YMMV / Dear Diary (2018)

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Many characters receive this treatment, even after chapters that delve into their inner thoughts. It's unclear how anyone really feels.
    • Is Bakugou an unforgivable abuser or an extremely Troubled, but Cute adorable love interest? Many fans might lean towards the former.
    • Is the reader a useless and unsympathetic doormat with self-destructive tendencies or are they merely a victim of various kinds of abuse, mainly by Bakugou? Satori's own accusations don't help matters.
    • Is Satori a well-meaning and good friend doing her best to help the reader or just a bossy Jerkass who needs to be called out? The reader and Satori even fight about this one.
  • Author's Saving Throw: The author attempts this every now and then by reading the comments and incorporating it into the story. The success varies upon each attempt.
  • Bile Fascination: Not pronounced by any means, but there are some fans who simply read just to see where this abuse goes. Many still actually enjoy the fic for what it's worth.
  • Cargo Ship: The reader is often shipped with therapy, with many wishing for a therapy ending after all the abuse she's endured.
  • Die for Our Ship: Bakugou is an odd example. He's wanted dead by a few, but more for the general abuse. Although, some still want him dead for shipping too.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: Bakugou is this in spades. He doesn't care about romance in canon and abuses the reader in the fanfic, yet he is always treated lovingly by the author and fans.
  • Esoteric Happy Ending: The author has already confirmed in the comments that the reader will end up with Bakugou at the end of the story. Given the popularity of the reader x therapy ship and the reader x Todoroki ship, as well as the abusive tendencies from Bakugou, not everyone was happy with this idea.
  • Moral Event Horizon: For some, Bakugou already crossed this long ago when he crushed the reader's heart. Then, he sexually assaulted her during a training exercise (although that was rewritten later). And throughout the fanfic, he verbally abuses the reader and others. Despite this mainly being a Bakugou x Reader fic, many have taken to other pairings.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Assuming it's not seen as pure Wangst, the reader's entire life in the story is full of this, especially considering we're seeing it from her point of view. The endless verbal abuse from Bakugou can really hit home for some, especially considering he doesn't receive full comeuppance for it.
  • Ron the Death Eater: Many characters are lightly given this treatment, considering everyone is different from canon.
    • Bakugou somehow simulataneously gets this combined with Draco in Leather Pants. He's much more aggressive and antagonistic than in canon, with his greater qualities like ambition and hidden kindness getting pushed to the sidelines.
    • Midoriya received this treatment after his cold reception towards the readers feelings, which was strangely out of character for him.
    • Uraraka gets this, typically from the readers. It's mainly for her crush on Midoriya and her willingness to ship the reader with Bakugou.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: Somehow applies to a Self-Insert Fic. Not all readers enjoy the evolving and devolving romances, especially the abuse. There's not many characters to root for, either.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic:
    • Although the reader is often chewed out for everything by all the characters, there are some that don't believe the reader deserves half the hate she receives. Especially considering she's the victim of an abusive relationship.
    • Satori got this for a while, especially when contrasted with the Extreme Doormat reader. Some liked Satori for her willingness to speak up, unlike the reader's meekness.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Many characters receive this due to their personalities differing from canon (where many were Nice Guys) but a few stand out in particular.
    • Bakugou, to the point where many wish the reader would end up with Todoroki instead. There's the fact that the tags on the fanfic even admit that he's verbally abusive, and he constantly puts down the reader for everything. Note that many people still consider him cute despite the Romanticized Abuse.
    • The reader, for whom many wish she would grow a backbone and fight back against everyone instead of sitting there and taking it.
    • The reader's best friend Satori counts too. It got to the point where many readers hated Satori, causing the writer to have the reader rebel against Satori and call her out for everything.
    • Various other friends of the reader may be viewed unsympathetically if the reader doesn't think they're doing enough to help the reader's situation. Ashido is one prime example, given that she often pushes the reader and Bakugou to be together, despite his abusive tendencies.
  • Wangst: The reader's angst is often described to be this. Many wish that they could grow a backbone, while others are more sympathetic.
  • Why Would Anyone Take Him Back?: Fans question how the reader could ever end up dating her abuser, Bakugou Katsuki. But it's confirmed by the author that they will end up together by the end of the story.
  • The Woobie: The reader is put through the wringer by all characters, most of whom were quite nicer in the canonical story.
