YMMV / Curse of the Pink Panther

Go To

  • One-Scene Wonder: Roger Moore as Inspector Clouseau deserved a better film than this.
  • Replacement Scrappy: Sleigh was created to be the replacement for Clouseau as the protagonist of the franchise. Most fans found Sleigh to be a weak substitute.
  • Sequelitis: Like Trail and Son, the film is hated by most of the fandom and is considered strong evidence that the franchise's success was due more to Peter Sellers than to Blake Edwards.
  • Signature Scene: Roger Moore's cameo as Inspector Clouseau is widely considered to be the only "good" scene in the film.
  • Special Effects Failure: When Francois pats Clifton on the back, a lens in his glasses pops out into his hand. We never see the lens in Sleigh's hand, nor when he tucks it in his pocket, and you can clearly see the overheads reflecting from inside the rim of his glasses.
  • Tearjerker: The wax museum scene, at least up until Cato's ambush. The sad mournful music as Clifton looks at all the various disguises can bring a tear to the viewer's face as the sight of all those wax statues of the late Chief Inspector clad in the various disguises, costumes, and outfits that brought laughter and joy to millions are now being used to mourn Clouseau. Not only that, Cato is refusing to return the disguises to Prof. Balls because, even though he voices his displeasure at certain aspects of having been Clouseau's live-in manservent, he feels that the costumes serve greater value as memorializing the late Chief Inspector. He must have valued Clouseau very much to turn his apartment into a museum while enduring racist and threatening answering machine messages from the irate professor. Even the first wax figure Sleigh encounters, donning Clouseau's standard trenchcoat-fedora outfit, appears to have a sad, vacant expression on it's face.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Trail of the Pink Panther focused on the new character Marie Jouveat investigating the disappearance of Inspector Clouseau. The film ended with Marie still hopeful that Clouseau will be found, which makes the viewer believe that she will return in the sequel. While there is a female newsreader in Curse, she isn't Marie, and has little-to-no impact on the Clouseau investigation (according to the script, the female newsreader was originally intended to be Marie Jouvet).
  • Vindicated by History: While Curse initially received very poor reviews from critics and failed miserably at the box office, the film has since been dubbed a Guilty Pleasure or even a decent film by those who don't compare Ted Wass to Peter Sellers.
