YMMV / Catfish: The TV Show

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement: The series itself is more popular than the film Catfish was based on.
  • Growing the Beard: The show became rather enjoyable from the second season, due to the increased budget, more varied locations, greater focus on more of the backgrounds of the potential victims and well as catfishes.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • The conversation that Nev and Justin had in season 2 where Nev assumed that Justin was gay (because he was in a romantic relationship with the hopeful Artis) had become a meme.
Nev: Let me take a stab at this. You're gay.
    Justin: Obviously I'm not gay.
Nev: It's not so obvious. I mean you're pretending to be a girl online and having a romantic relationship with a guy.
Justin: I give it to you, you got me there. So maybe.
    • The show popularized the term "catfish".
    • "You should've never called me a fat ass Kelly Price!"
  • One-Scene Wonder: Catfish Justin from season 2, due to his over-the-top villain persona and Well-Intentioned Extremist reason to catfish, as he was cheated on and wanted to punish potential cheaters.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: The earlier episodes are well more liked compared to the later episodes, because some fans feel that the later episodes MTV are deliberately making the show slightly overdramatic for views.
  • The Woobie:
    • Some of the hopefuls people would feel sorry for (especially if they have a upsetting backstory), but there will be some people who won't show any sympathy for them, especially if the hopeful has a spouse or has been lying to Nev and Max.
    • The Catfish in some episodes that people might feel sorry for, but one might ignore all that and focus on the fact that they were being deceitful online.
