  • Alas, Poor Villain: Perry serves as The Chew Toy throughout his appearances, all while remaining Affably Evil with emphasis on the affable. Of course, that just makes him getting temporarily eaten by Starving Venom Fusion Dragon and later killed by Adam in an effort to kill the heroes standing around him even more to the readers' lament.
  • Captain Obvious Reveal: The idea Mercury is in possession of an Over One Hundred Number due to being able to see Astral is rather obvious when you remember what deck he uses. Mercury uses a "Battlin' Boxer" deck, which just happens to be the archetype connected to one of the Barian Emperors, Alito, and his Over One Hundred Number, Number 105: Battlin' Boxer Star Cestus. Unlike with Pyrrha and Ilia, whose use of them came more as a surprise due to using archetypes unrelated to their Over Hundred Numbers, "Heroic Champions" and "Amazoness" respectively, Mercury's deck choice makes it more expected that he'd have one.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Taiyang was incredibly well-received during the three-chapter Patch Arc, with particular praise going to his Zane Truesdale-inspired Dark and Troubled Past that left him determined to be the best parent possible for Ruby and Yang. Helps that despite being a Retired Badass, he gets to show what an experienced Signer can do in an awesome duel with Adam that ends with him busting out Red Nova Dragon.
    • Perry, the White Fang member who wears glasses and serves as the member Torchwick interacts with the most, proved surprisingly popular for a guy who Word of God admitted was only included in the story to give Roman a canon character to tag-duel with against Ruby and Penny at the docks. He proved quite competent in his second duel with Ruby, subverting Villain Forgot to Level Grind by side-decking in traps specifically to stop her previous Synchro strategies and forcing her to bring out Starving Venom Fusion Dragon for the first time to beat him. No wonder many readers went Alas, Poor Villain at his following fate.
