YMMV / Bugbo

  • Awesome Art: The series uses Retraux Adobe Flash-style animation. While the artwork itself may look intentionally crude, it nonetheless recreates the look of old Flash animations very accurately. Also, the way the characters are animated is very expressive and memorable. Special mention goes to the mayor in "Under the Oak," whose movements are brimming with a haughty and pompous personality.
  • Awesome Music:
    • The intro and outro music have a nice jingle to them.
    • Thomas Flyswatter's theme is a fire track that stands out because it is reminsicent of Toby Fox's music.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment:
    • Near the end of "Under the Oak," when Gradient Joe makes circuses legal again, the Hollow Clown says he wishes his father was here to see this. Just then, the ground rumbles, and a clown... dragon/dog(?) thing bursts out. The scene immediately cuts away after that, and this is the last we see of the two clowns.
    • When the Red Brother appears in "A Familiar Foe," he pops out of nowhere right when Gerbo says they'd need one to get out of their predicament, gives them what appears to be a glowing blue mushroom-shaped bag, leaves and is never mentioned again. Mitigated somewhat by the fact that the snake that was inside the bag is used to get Gerbo and Gradient Joe up the mountain.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: Fans speculate (or even headcanon) that Bugbo is autistic, due to showing symptoms of the disorder.
    • Some fans even go as far as to diagnose Gerbo, Gradient Joe, and Hoppo with autism as well, although displayed differently for each one. Gerbo having particular interests, Gradient Joe being nonverbal, and Hoppo being prone to talking rapidly.
  • Fandom-Enraging Misconception: While it does have unsettling elements from time to time, it ultimately is not a horror series and confusing it as such will have you gently corrected at best and called stupid at worst.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • "Hey, you can't be here! I'm giving a speech!"note
      • "No you aren't"note
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: The moment Thomas Flyswatter made his debut in A Familiar Foe, a lot of people were immediately enthralled by his cartoon villain persona. Fanart of him was even made the day the episode was released!
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The Stone Merchant's death in "Set in Stone." When Gradient Joe tries to make a deal with him, he lets out an agonizing scream without warning as his body rearranges itself and the screen gets glitchy, until all that's left is a pile of lifeless rocks.
    • "Under the Oak" has a subtle example. Bugbo's This Is Gonna Suck reaction, saying "Oh," when Gradient Joe has to give a speech despite not being able to talk. It's funny the first time that Bugbo says it due to the Beat beforehand. But when Gerbo starts panicking, and all Bugbo can say is "Oh" again, it becomes much creepier. It really highlights his Lack of Empathy.
  • The Woobie: The Hollow Clown in "Under the Oak." Despite his creepy appearance and voice, he's not an evil clown at all. He used to be part of a thriving circus. When the mayor made circuses illegal, most people didn't care that much, but the Hollow Clown was heartbroken because the circus meant everything to him. So he moved it underground, where he lives in the abandoned, grimy circus tent alone. He even breaks into tears after telling his story to the protagonists.
