YMMV / Breaking the Deal

Go To

  • Complete Monster: Mephisto, having manipulated Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson into sacrificing their marriage in order to save Aunt May's life, uses it to kickstart his plans for multiversal domination. Using the marriage's sacrifice to receive a power boost—with the added benefit of wiping Spider-Man's future daughter from existence—Mephisto begins laying waste to various dimensions and either slaughtering their inhabitants, or enslaving them with painful magical growths. When he makes his move on the Earth, he unleashes his demonic minions on New York City, where they waste no time in killing civilians while he has Mary Jane whisked away to his lair, where he keeps her as a slave bound by barbed ropes. Not just one for merely deceiving others into making deals that will ruin their lives and those of others, Mephisto actively revels in his manipulative behavior, fondly reminiscing about tricking Ghost Rider into making a deal that would kill his father figure, and gleefully crushing Mary Jane's spirit with the knowledge of what their disastrous bargain led to.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In this fanfic, Mephisto stole the marriage between Peter and MJ because Spider-Man's future daughter will be the one who finally beat him. In 2021, we discover in The Amazing Spider-Man (2018) the real reason of One More Day: Mephisto is trying to ensure that Peter and Mary Jane's daughter, who is Spider-Girl in alternate timelines and is crucial to his defeat, is never born.
  • Memetic Mutation: Not! One! More! Day!
  • Moral Event Horizon: Peter considers the deal that MJ and he made with Mephisto to be this, even though he finds out that Mephisto had directly intervened to warp their minds and prevent their allies and enemies from giving them a chance to save Aunt May, despite there being many ways that she could have still lived.
  • Most Wonderful Sound: Spidey is about to die to the hands of the Cancerverse versions of Iron Man, Cyclops and others, and has fully accepted this... and then, ''snikt''!
  • Take That, Scrappy!: Peter gets a really good one when Michelle Gonzales bugs him for one of many petty reasons that she has been known to provide in the comics.
Peter: I said shut the hell up, you useless idiot!
  • Tear Jerker: Many readers felt this way when Aunt May died as a result of reality moving back to its proper state. At least Peter got to say goodbye to her properly this time around.
