YMMV / BoJack Horseman S4 06 "Stupid Piece of Sh*t"

Go To

  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Hollyhock praises Beatrice for the cup of coffee that she made while telling BoJack that she's not the same abusive mother who raised him. You may want to take fewer sips of it, Hollyhock; a few episodes later will reveal that Beatrice was spiking it with amphetamines in her attempt to "help" Hollyhock lose weight.
      • One of BoJack's negative thoughts had him fear that Beatrice will "poison [his] own daughter against him" if she leaves her alone with Hollyhock.
    • BoJack confides in Mr. Peanutbutter that he knows that Hollyhock getting attached to him is a bad thing. Every time someone becomes his friend, he messes it up and ruins their lives. Mr. Peanutbutter reassures BoJack that he's not that person anymore, and Hollyhock will be fine. It's mostly true for this season, but then Season 6 comes along and Hollyhock severs ties with BoJack and changes her phone number after finding out that he left an alcohol-poisoned Maddy and a traumatized Pete at an ER entrance, as well as the whole Sarah Lynn thing and his history of abusing his power over women.
    • Felicity Huffman has been apparently living in a mansion that is just under BoJack's and to placate her for all the gross and weird shit, Mr. Peanutbutter praises her for being a "beloved television and film actress" while going with Damned by Faint Praise for BoJack. Come 2019-20, it came out that Huffman was involved in a scandal to get her kids into accredited colleges by cheating and falsifying information. Yeah, not so beloved now.
  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • BoJack is both extremes here. Not only does he do the single most deliberately hurtful thing in the series thus far here, but we spend the whole episode from his POV to get a clear idea of just how much of his own worst enemy he is.
    • Same goes for his mother. She's senile, fragile and slowly wasting away, but she's still the woman who made Bojack's childhood a living hell, so it's not too shocking when Bojack throws her doll out the window.
  • Memetic Mutation: "These are cookies. This is not breakfast."
  • Trapped by Mountain Lions: The sham wedding subplot is completely disconnected from the rest of the episode. A clear case of Tropes Are Tools since having to spend an entire episode submerged in Bojack's self-loathing would be too much to bear.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: Sure, BoJack aggravating Beatrice's dementia by throwing her Companion Cube out the window was an utterly cruel thing to do, especially once we learn why it made her freak out. However, after watching her be a total bitch to her son with little to no retribution for three seasons, you kind of want him to. It ultimately works in both of their favors, as it gives BoJack (and the audience) enough catharsis to not want to see her get cursed out later on.
