So Bad, It's Horrible but it's In-Universe Examples Only:
Food
- The Krusty Krab, a famous Bikini Bottom-based fast food chain that needs little to no introduction, is generally known for producing high-quality wares that are beloved amongst undersea food enthusiasts, especially classics such as the restaurant's famous flagship product, the Krabby Pattynote Though these are quite well-loved, the restaurant is also well-known for being very experimental with their menu and trying out new things. In many cases, this turns out quite well, such as with the Krusty Krab Pizza and the Krusty Dog. However, there are some that turn out far less well, as listed here.
- After a scathing criticism of the restaurant and its services and products came out from famed television critic Gene Scallop, where he claimed the only bright spot of his experience was the cook SpongeBob SquarePants, the Krusty Krab would go all-out on rebranding itself as the Spongy Krab, complete with the introduction of Spongy Patties, a variation on the restaurant's flagship product that was specially sponge-themed; being yellow with green pores. The patties sold well, but many customers were instantly disappointed by the mediocre taste and the odd, sponge-like texture. Things quickly went south, however, when it turned out that the patties were actually spoiled and therefore tainted with a unique bacterial strain that caused the people who ate it to turn yellow and develop green spots all over, with their bellies becoming distended and the vast majority of them being hospitalized. It was bad enough that the restaurant's CEO was taken to court and sued heavily for the damages he caused. The restaurant was ultimately reverted to the Krusty Krab, with all but one piece of the former "Spongy" branding being permanently dismantled or removed, including the infamous Spongy Patties.
- During the infamous "Grease Wars" that plagued this restaurant and its chief rival, the Chum Bucket, it released Yummy Bunz and Wow! Soup in an attempt to drum up business. Notably, unlike other examples on this list, both products were well-received at their inception because of how good they tasted. However, within just a few minutes of eating it, every patron found out just how sickening the products really were, with many of them getting stomach cramps, nausea, diarrhea, and one patron even having to get their stomach pumped. When the Bikini Bottom Health Department caught wind of this, they sent out an inspector to uncover the problem, and a public statement was soon released revealing that the foods were far greasier than was allowed by BBHD standards, note leading to both foods being permanently banned and the Krusty Krab being temporarily shut down. Mr. Krabs, the founder/owner of the restaurant, has since distanced himself from the events that occurred during the Grease Wars and has never recontinued either of the products mentioned.
Holiday Events
- Santa's Igloo is known for being one of the most infamous tourist trapping scams ever run in Elwood City, having run multiple fraudulent advertisements both on television and via other forms of media that depicted the tourist attraction as a magical holiday-themed beach resort where Santa and his reindeer hung out when vacationing from the North Pole, and roadside billboards were well-remembered for always advertising that you could share a sundae with Santa if you decided to visit. People who actually went to the attraction would be greeted by a poorly-decorated townhouse with a giant cardboard igloo placed around it to make it stand out, and one of the most unconvincing actors to ever wear the signature jolly red outfit with fluffy white trimming that's come to define the character Santa Claus. It was obvious to tourists both from within and outside the city that most of the money went into the promotional gimmicks, and the final straw for many was the fact that "Santa" himself would tell visitors hoping for some delicious ice cream sundaes that you could share one with him...if you brought a sundae to share. It didn't survive long, and has largely been forgotten by most for everything except its notoriously fake advertisements.
Western Animation
- In 1929, Walt Disney wanted to make a Halloween-related short film of his popular cartoon character, Mickey Mouse. As a result, Mickey's Best Friend came into existence. Of course, when you realize that co-creator Ub Iwerks utterly despised the episode and that Walt Disney Studios has never redistributed the short film even one time after it premiered almost a whole century ago, it begins to dawn on you that something is horribly wrong. It had a very Troubled Production
