Ever since the series started gathering more and more characters and making new Story Arcs, it's become more common for the series to shock its viewers with numerous moments that subvert its status quo and introduce new things to the series, for better or for worse.

Subpages are Spoilers Off. You Have Been Warned.

    open/close all folders
    General
  • "MARIO'S CHALLENGE": The one who managed to get to the top of the tower and challenge Mario is Shroomy, a character who hasn't appeared in any previous episodes. Even Mario is puzzled by his appearance.
  • "The Grand Festival": During the fireworks, Meggy tells her friends that next year will be her last chance to win Splatfest as it will be the last one, setting up the events of the movie.
  • "Mario's Mask of Madness": With the Fierce Diety Mask, Melony goes from being a melon to an animesque girl, with the end of the episode confirming it to be a permanent change.
  • "Mario VS YouTubers": After Meggy spends the episode trying to become Mario's boxing teacher, only to fail and finds he didn't need her help anyway. Then the ending reveals what has been implied in her past few appearances; that she has been in a rut ever since Splatfest and has no idea what to do with her life. This is followed by the brief appearance of something in her house before the episode ends.
  • "The Pursuit of Happiness": After multiple episodes worth of foreshadowing and numerous teasers outside of the series, this episode finally kickstarts Meggy's departure from the series. After several disastrous attempts to find a new career, Meggy has a breakdown; and the thing watching her from last episode is revealed to be Shadow Meggy, who tells her to just give up. Fortunately, Mario and co decide to send her on a trip to Port Aurora to find herself.
  • "IT’S GOTTA BE PERFECT": The gang ultimately ends up needing to destroy Peach’s castle, and unlike every other time it’s been destroyed, it isn’t coming back.

    The Waluigi Arc
  • "Mario and the T-Pose Virus". The Reveal at the end that Waluigi was the one who gave Shroomy the T-Pose mushroom cements his new status as an Arc Villain, sets up ongoing continuity for the first time in the series and makes Waluigi's Time a wham of its own on rewatch as it can now be seen as his Start of Darkness.
  • "Mario SAW": The one who kidnapped Mario and Luigi, and forcing them to play its sadistically deadly games, was Waluigi himself, whose Power of Rejection reaches its peak when Mario finally rejects him.
  • "The Mario Convention": Waluigi (disguised as Hideo Kojima) finally sets his plan into action and causes a second T-Pose virus epidemic, with patient zero being Meggy. Oh and 1-UP Mushrooms won't cure it this time. To make matters even worse, Waluigi uses his full power to mind control Master Hand, bending him to his will. By the end of the episode, Mario, SMG4, Tari and Fishy Boopkins are the only ones to escape the convention unscathed.note

    The Rapper Bob Arc
  • "The Mario Concert" starts out like any other episode, with Bob going on tour to earn money for a new house, until Boopkins ruins Bob's concert. Bob, having had enough of Boopkins, lashes out at him for ruining his performance before revealing that everything nice he had done from saving Boopkins to Bobsgiving was all orchestrated by him to build his rap career. With that, he denounces his friendship with Boopkins and leaves him in the alley, determined to rebuild his rap career by himself, signifying the beginning of The Rapper Bob Arc.
  • "Mario and the Diss Track": Bob releases his latest song, "Ultimate Diss Track", which angers Mario, SMG4 and the gang enough to convince Saiko to help them getting back at Bob by releasing their own diss track, "Darkest Hour". This results in Bob losing everything and his friends shutting their door on him.
  • "SMG4 Christmas 2018: The Most Important Thing": With the help of Waluigi, Bob realizes that his friends are more important than fame. He then announces his retirement as a rapper, which is what finally allows Boopkins and the others to forgive him.

The Anime Arc (and Meggy's Destiny)
  • "The Splatfest Incident": After seemingly ending the Anime Arc in the last episode with the unbanning of Anime, Meggy's team goes to Splatfest only for Meggy to go missing before the first big match. Investigating, they go to her house and discover it's been completely trashed and that she has been kidnapped. After a fight between the main cast over if Axol did it or not, they go their separate ways to find her, kickstarting the true final half of The Anime Arc.
  • "Mario and the Experiment" reveals that Francis was the one who kidnapped Axol and the Inklings in order make Axol's stolen Inkweaver more powerful.
  • "World War Mario": After defeating Francis' Sephiroth replica, the Arc Villain responds by simply creating another Sephiroth replica that impales Desti from behind, making her the first character to get Killed Off for Real.
  • "Final Hours": Not only is Desti confirmed dead, Meggy Spletzer comes out of her Heroic Sacrifice unscathed, only to immediately reveal that being drained of all of her ink turned her from a female Inkling into a human girl.
  • "Meggy's Destiny: An SMG4 Movie": After years of hard work and training, as well as one year after the horrific events on the Anime Island, Meggy finally wins Splatfest, making peace with former Inkling self and finally saying goodbye to Desti.

    The YouTube Arc
  • "I Can't Believe It's Not SMG4!": Cronius is revealed to be SMG3 in disguise and one of the members of SMG3's new gang is Belle Fontiere, a character from Meta Runner.
  • "Stupid Mario Arcade": During the Space Invaders parody, Greg the Alien is accidentally killed by Mario, which future episodes confirm is permanent.
  • "The Internet Graveyard": Axol appears in the Internet Graveyard 5 years older and with a changed design after he was sent there due to Mario's YouTube Remote-powered pranking spree and has gone somewhat crazy as a result, with the Inkweaver now destroyed beyond repair.
  • "Mario VS YouTube": By reminding him of Greg the Alien's death back in "Stupid Mario Arcade", SMG3 convinces Mario to join him and his Anti-Cast in an elaborate heist involving Susan's YouTube Remote. When the group seemingly fails, Anti-Shroomy reveals that he succeeded in stealing the Remote amidst of the chaos, under the promise of being able to kill as many demons as he wants. With the YouTube Remote in hand, SMG3 reveals his true master plan: to use the power of the Remote to erase SMG4 and his friends with extreme prejudice, and take the rival's channel for himself. He then sends Mario to the Internet Graveyard, which then cuts to Mario finished telling SMG4 about the heist and the events of the previous two episodes, prompting SMG4 to gather all of their friends for the upcoming battle. The episode itself revealed to be the 6th episode in the YouTube Arc, making the past few episodes a part of it as well.
  • "Deleted.": SMG3 and the Anti-Cast succeed in erasing SMG4 and almost all of his friends from existence, leaving Mario as the sole survivor.
  • "A Totally Normal SMG4 Episode": Mario learns that the main cast and Susan Wojcicki are in the Internet Graveyard, revealing that SMG3 and the Anti-Cast's timeline meddling only causes their respective debut episodes to lose their relevance, hence their survival in the Graveyard. After Mario seemingly fails to get his hands on the YouTube Remote to fix everything, its revealed that Mario stole SMG3's phone instead to free everyone from the Graveyard for a final confrontation.
  • "War of the Fat Italians 2020": Meggy is struck by a stray blast from the YouTube Remote, earning her a permanent human voice which she then uses to convince SMG3's own gang to turn on him, leading to the defeat and banishment of SMG4's Criminal Doppelgänger to the Internet Graveyard, and the dissolution of the Anti-Cast and integration into SMG4's group.

    The Genesis Arc
  • At the end of "Mario Babies", when it's SMG4's turn to talk about his past, it's revealed that he doesn't remember, only being able to remember up to his first appearance. SMG4 then suffers an identity crisis.
  • "SMG4's Origins" reveals not only the origins of SMG4, but SMG3 as well. SMG4 came from a massive, meme-filled USB drive that crashed into Mushroom Kingdom after the events of Super Mario 64, with said flash drive covering the world in meme and turning everyone into the crazy idiots people know the show as. SMG4 would then tame the memes to make content and live at Peach's castle while destroying the USB drive he came from. As for SMG3, he came from a similar USB drive that was set to crash in the Internet Graveyard, only for a green ball of light to glitch it into the Mushroom Kingdom, and became enemies with SMG4 after the latter called him stupid.
  • The "10 Year Anniversary Special" movie doubles down and reveals several important things;
    • Melony is confirmed to possess the powers of the Fierce Deity Mask by manifesting its sword to take on corrupted dead memes and zombie Mario Recolors.
    • The reason why the Mario Recolors were not around as much was because they were all kidnapped by Zero, who was trying to find Mario, their world's Avatar. After Zero was sealed again, the Mario Recolors establish a town called Bloopersville.
    • The two hobos that worship the number 4 are revealed to actually be worshiping SMG4, and that their true names were SMG1 and SMG2, hailing from another universe that was destroyed by Zero. They seemingly die trying to seal away Zero again.
    • The USB drives that SMG4 and SMG3 came out of are known as "Guardian Pods", which are the only things that can fight against Zero. SMG3's is used to seal away Zero, but the anti-virus subscription is due to expire.
  • "Into The Dark Web" reveals more on the SMGs.
    • It is confirmed that SMG3 was always meant to land in the Internet Graveyard, but his pod was hit by stray shot of Zero's power and landed in the Mushroom Kingdom instead.
    • SMG1 and 2's pod location is revealed to be under a mountain where a Jesus statue is.
    • The ending has SMG3's antivirus protection finally expires when Bob refuses to extend the warranty, and an eye monster much like the one that plagued SMG4 back in "SMG4 Goes Insane" comes out and tails Bob from behind.
  • At the end of "The Day HE Arrived", Zero's USB appears on Peach's Castle, while Axol starts acting... Strange.
  • At the end "Doomsday, But Mario Is Okay", Mario is anything, BUT okay, after he got abducted by Zero.
  • Mario, SMG4 and SMG3 were sucked into Zero's USB at the end of "Mario And The Backrooms". This episode also confirms that Zero possessed Axol.
  • "MARIOS OKAY" confirmed that SMG1 and SMG2 are still alive.
  • "The Final Piece" reveals that Zero's plan consists in recreation of his own universe. It also reveals that Axol's manga from "The Day HE Arrived" is a love letter to Melony.
  • In order to destroy Zero and save the universe in "War of the Fat Italians 2021", Axol has to die at Melony’s hands as he became permanently fused to Zero, making him the first main character to kick the bucket.

    The Revelations Arc
  • "Mario and the God Box" reveals the goofy Box Club's object of worship to be an actual Artifact of Doom that, according to SMG1, will unleash untold horrors and bring about The End of the World as We Know It if opened. Yeah, not so goofy anymore.
  • “Absolute Betrayal” is one of the biggest ones yet. Melony finds out that the seemingly mean but nice boy helping her learn to control her powers… not only was he just in her mind but his true identity is her archenemy as the boy's eye moves to the center and becomes a 0 pupil... That’s right: Zero, the darkest and most dangerous SMG4 villain has returned from the grave. And worse he has possessed her, like he did Axol, and now has the means to get the God Box.
    • Not to mention that he has opened a portal to the Great Beyond, which turns out to be the real world.
  • SMG4 Movie: Revelations is this in SPADES.

    The Lawsuit Arc
  • In "Mario Can't Play With You Anymore," Lawyer Kong has isolated all of the Nintendo characters from everything else, separating the Nintendo characters from SMG4's gang. Not only that, but all of the Nintendo characters that belong inside of the barrier are slowly reverting to a ignorant version of their canon selves, causing them to only care about their predetermined goal. On a slightly happier note, Meggy is temporarily transformed back into an Inkling by a temporary IP change contract, allowing her access into the barrier.
  • "NINTENDO HAS CLAIMED THIS VIDEO" has Meggy and SMG4 creating a parody law contract...but the DMCA gets signed and turned in first. This results in the deaths of SMG4's OCs with only SMG4 himself still standing. And even then, not for long.
  • "War of the Fat Italians 2022" has Miyamoto force SMG4 (and SMG3 by proxy), Bob and Fishy Boopkins to all permanently change their looks, effectively leaving the Mario characters as the only recurring cast members with their original Nintendo designs.
