Riley's First Date?, a short that is part of the Pixar Shorts, is a companion piece that takes place after the events of Inside Out. It was initially made as an extra featured on the Blu-Ray and DVD release of the movie.

Picking up from the final scene of the movie, Riley's parents are in shock when she brings a boy home. Now they must try to connect with and understand him, with the emotions of Riley, her parents and the boy's head all having a say about the situation.

Riley's First Date? provides examples of:

  • Air Guitar: Riley's Dad ends up playing, with Jordan on air bass, after finding common ground in their music choices.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Riley's parents get one. Complete with fireworks and AC/DC playing inside Dad's head.
  • Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: Naturally, there are hints of it from Riley's father.
Riley's Dad: There is a boy in my house! [...] Why is there a boy in my house?
    [Later...]
Dad's Anger: I know what you're doing here, Jordan. You don't think I know what you know, but I know, you little punk!
Dad's Fear: He's not good enough for Riley. No one is!
Dad's Sadness: Go back to jail!
Dad's Anger: What are you looking for, Jordan? Something to steal?
    Dad's Sadness: Like our daughter.
  • Call-Back:
    • When Riley's dad sees the boy, the emotions in his head go to "Red Alert", causing a "BOY!" alarm to blare in the background in the same tone as Jordan's own "GIRL!" alarm at the end of the film.
    • Mom's Sadness says "Let's probe" when she wants to get information from Riley, just as she did in the dinner scene in the film. Her attempt isn't quite as tactful, however.
    • Disgust walks away from the console in response to mom's embarrassing attempt at slang, similar to how she stormed off in response to the broccoli pizza.
    • Much like "putting The Foot down", after Dad's Fear believes Jordan is giving them backtalk, Dad's Anger gives the other Emotions the order to give Jordan the Boot, complete with a siren, Permissive Action Links and Fear about to activate the lever.
    • Mom's Disgust says "he's making that stupid face again". It's a different face in this case (the smoulder).
  • Comically Missing the Point: Mr. Anderson, primed by over-protectiveness, misinterprets almost everything Jordan says as insubordination when in fact it's mainly just Jordan being a bit of an absent-minded ditz.
  • Cue the Flying Pigs: Riley's Mom tells her that her father would never embarrass her in front of her friend, just before AC/DC plays loudly downstairs.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The short focuses more on Riley's parents, especially Mr. Andersen.
  • Duet Bonding: Though Riley's dad initially is very suspicious of Jordan, he comes to like him more when he learns he was in a band. Then they realize that they both like AC/DC... and an impromptu rock concert breaks out for a few minutes.
  • He Is Not My Boyfriend: Riley insists that she's just going skating with a group of friends when her mother tries to probe.
  • Public Domain Soundtrack: The short uses some classical songs such as "In the Hall of the Mountain King", "Flight of the Bumblebee", "Blue Danube Waltz", "Swan Lake Suite", and "Hungarian Dance No. 5".
  • Secondary Character Title: The short focuses less on Riley, and more on her parents and Jordan instead.
  • Speaking Like Totally Teen: Attempted by Riley's mom. Riley seems to like the attempt about as much as broccoli pizza.
Mrs. Andersen: So, what's the dealio with Jordan? O-M-G, he is awesomesauce, fo'shizzy!
  • Stealth Pun: Jordan is subjected to this twice through his Headquarters and the area surrounding:
    • A brief look thereat reveals his emotions are all goofing off. Only Fear seems to be making any effort at all, and even he is easily distracted. He's absent-minded.
    • He also has memories randomly strewn across the floor. He's scatter-brained.
  • The Stinger: After the credits, Mom's Headquarters are shown with her Emotions reacting with contentment to having just been kissed by Dad, while "Take My Breath Away" by Berlin plays.
  • Tempting Fate: Riley freaks out when she realizes her mother left Jordan with her father. Her mother tries to insist he wouldn't do anything embarrassing, but can't even finish the thought before rock music starts blaring from down the stairs.
