Portrait of the Artist as a Young Bunny is a 1980 cartoon directed by Chuck Jones and Phil Monroe, starring Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd with Wile E Coyote And The Roadrunner cameoing. The cartoon was originally part of Bugs Bunny Bustin' Out All Over alongside Spaced Out Hare.

When school is out for the summer, Bugs is elated, until he remembers that doesn't go to school anymore. This leads into a Whole Episode Flashback of when Bugs was a young rabbit and how he started his long-time rivalry with Elmer.

Tropes Appearing In This Cartoon:

  • Achievements in Ignorance: Elmer is able to walk over a cliff because he hasn't studied gravity at school yet. Bugs then leaves a book on gravity where Elmer finds it and reads it as he walks over the cliff again; once he learns what gravity is, he falls.
    Young Elmer: Personawwy, ignowance is the best powicy.
  • Bribe Backfire: Bugs refuses to take what he construes as a bribe from Elmer, refusing to "contribute to juvenile delinquency. He then asks for donations from the audience.
    Young Bugs: You wouldn't want me to work my way through reform school, would you?
  • Elmuh Fudd Syndwome: Bugs takes advantage of Elmer's rhotacism.
    Young Elmer: Aha! At wast! I'm gonna shoot you, you vicious fowest cweature!
    Young Bugs: Look, Doc. You got it all wrong. That's my line. [Takes rifle] It's "I'm gonna shoot you, you vicious forest Elmer!"
    Young Elmer: Oh, no. That's my wine.
    Young Bugs: Your what?
    Young Elmer: My wine! Wine! That's my wine!
    Young Bugs: Aha! Offering me wine? You oughta be ashamed! [Tauntingly] I'm gonna tell the authorities! I'm gonna tell the authorities!
  • Gravity Is a Harsh Mistress: Invoked by Bugs when he leaves a "Gravity For Beginners" book for Elmer to read.
  • Literal Metaphor: Just before attempting to shoot Bugs, Elmer comments that he can't inform the authorities and get him sent to reform school if he kicks the bucket first. Bugs obliges "Anything you say, Doc!" while dropping a bucket on Elmer's head and kicking it.
  • Large Ham: Bugs's death act is overly dramatic, and Elmer gets impatient waiting for it to finish.
  • Oh, Crap!: Elmer when he reads "Gravity For Beginners" and then realizes he's over a ravine.
  • Serious Business: Apparently some consider falling down to be one.
    Wile E. Coyote (holding a sign): Move over buster, and let someone fall who knows how!
