The Sea in You
is a Webcomic created by Jessi Sheron.
It's a story on Tapas that focuses on a young girl named Corinth who has a unexpected encounter with a mermaid, which sparks a strange friendship between the two.
It also has been uploaded to Webtoon.
The Tropes in this Comic Are:
- Alien Blood: Mermaids's blood is black or dark purple.
- Chekhov's Skill: ASL (American Sign Language) is this, as Skylla uses it to communicate to Corinth after she loses her voice when she becomes a human.
- Destructive Romance: Cornith and Seth's romance plays off of this.
- Foreshadowing: Page 1 not only starts with Cornith on the cover wearing clothing with mermaids on it but the opening shot of the comic shows her, through a cutout of a mermaid. 179 episodes later, in a effort to save Skylla's life, Cornith gets turned into a mermaid herself.
- Freeze-Frame Bonus: In Episode 70, on Corinth's phone she has a 💖 next to Seth's name. However, Seth doesn't have one next to Corinth's.
- Our Mermaids Are Different: The mermaid species in this story are physically closer to fish than humans. They're able to put those who hear their song under a trance or to repel them. They can heal each other beyond themselves (Skylla claims she heals fast but whether that's due to that or magic or both is unknown) and manipulate water, which given enough time and practice and they can make and control the weather. Their method of talking sounds like screeching to the human ears and this can also be weaponized as Skylla shows in Episode 89 when she uses it to make her sister's ears bleed, protecting the items Cornith gave to her. As revealed in Episode 130 it's also their magic..
- Required Secondary Powers: Skylla considers having money and a house to be these for humans and makes sure to include them when she becomes human.
- Seashell Bra: Averted. As the author pointed out on Twitter: "Why doesn't Skylla have boobs? Because she's a fish."
