Josh Carrott, known as the Korean Englishman
is a Youtuber whose channel's primary focus is on exposing Westerners to Korean culture through, among many other things, the wide array of food on offer to travellers venturing there. Having spent time at a Korean university, his videos are often bilingual; switching between Korean and English. For those unversed in either of the languages, the videos are helpfully subtitled in both.
Tropes found in the Korean Englishman's videos:
- Big Eater: On more than one occasion, Dannote has proven that he's one of these, such as eating an entire twenty-six inch pizza on his own in London.
- Bilingual Bonus: Not so much a hidden message but, while the channel (and Josh himself) are referred to as Korean Englishman in English, the hangul which forms the channel logo is simply "Englishman"... in Korean.
- Black Comedy: The Christmas 2018 episode of JOLLY culminates in Ollie getting Josh a cremation urn. Not only that, he had it pre-engraved. With Josh's full name, his date of birth (complete with a blank space for his eventual date of death)... and 오늘은여기까지note engraved as the epitaph.
- Blatant Lies: Ollie's introduction to Episode 257 of JOLLYnote is packed full of them. Despite his proclamations of the episode he's celebrating being their best ever, it was their 24th worst in terms of overall view count; a fact which they mock through the use of fake accolades in a cinematic intro for Carrot Land: A Celebration.
- Bottle Episode: The JOLLY sub-channel is more like a Bottle Series, in which Josh and Ollie film episodes something approaching a studio format; the two of them sat in an indoor location in front of a camera.
- Catchphrase: "You're an idiot."
- Coordinated Clothes: Averted with identical twin brothers Rev. Chris and Charles. As far as the videos are concerned, they are rarely seen in clothing even close to identical, with one being an Anglican priest and the other being a Major in the British Army.
- Cuteness Overload: After multiple series showing adults around Korea, one from 2020note has Ollie and his wife bringing their then two-year-old daughter Juno along. As if the episodes themselves weren't enough, the supplementary "Snack Review With Juno"note mini-series has its own voiced intro... by Juno.
- Early-Installment Weirdness: The bilingual subtitles which form a fixture of newer videos weren't actually present in the early (late 2013) videos. Additionally, Josh spoke a lot less English on-screen, only doing so when directly addressing his co-stars, many of whom either didn't speak Korean at all or only knew very little.
- Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": While Ollie's father does have a namenote , both the fans and the video titles simply refer to him as Ollie's Dad, even going as far as having fans' gift packages addressed to him as such.
- Food Porn: With Korean food forming much of the content of the videos in general, there's bound to be some degree of food porn at work.
- Food Songs Are Funny: Inspired by his time in Korea, Andy created one about Korean fried chickennote , complete with drafting in over half a dozen musicians and most of the Korean Englishman cast to serve as backing vocalists.
- Heterosexual Life-Partners: Josh and Ollie are this, having met in university, complete with constant jokes about Ollie being Josh's "first wife"note
- Ineffectual Loner: The whole aim of 2019's Alone In Korea series was to help Ollie stop being one of these regarding his command of and confidence in speaking Korean. Rather than perpetually be on hand with his relatively expert grasp of the language, Josh took Ollie's place behind the camera and employed "guides", such as Eric Nam, to help Ollie utilise what he'd learned on the Korean public in a series of scenarios and challenges.
- In-Series Nickname: Johnny, much to Josh's amusement, dubbed himself Michin Namjanote at the start of a cooking video, leading them to jokingly suggest that they do a Michin Namja video series. When Johnny later came on his second trip out to Korea, they did precisely that.
- Leitmotif: Grieg's In The Hall Of The Mountain King for guests' inevitable reaction to spicy Korean food.
- Must Have Caffeine: Episode 145 of JOLLY has Josh and Ollie riding quite the caffeine high by the end as they sample the offerings of seven coffee shops in Wellington. Back-to-back.
- One-Steve Limit: Sho's friend Andy and the music-producer Andy are not the same person.

Portmanteau Couple Name: While not a romantic example, Josh and Ollie realised that theirs would make an ideal name for a video series; one which grew to be housed on its own channel.- Whenever certain guests appear on JOLLY, their inclusion prompts alterations to the usual intro or, in some cases, a replacement of the title card. These include JOLLIBEEnote and SHANDY.note
- The Bard: Johnny, with his acoustic guitar. Though Andy's prowess in a music studio ranks him a close second.
- The Man Behind the Man: In terms of Ollie's Korean lessons. A 2019 episode of JOLLY finally had him face-to-face with Hyunwoo Sun, one of the six authors of the Talk To Me In Korean series of textbooks Josh had been using. It went about as well as could be expected.Hyunwoo: I've been watching these video lessons closely...
Ollie: All of them? I've criticised the book quite a lot.
Hyunwoo: I know! - Those Two Guys: in addition to Josh and Ollie, there are hip-hop artists/rappers Guvna B and Barney Artist, and high schoolers (now in University) Armand and Max, and Major Charles and his twin Reverend Chris. All three sets have a similar dynamic to Josh and Ollie, with Major Charles, Armand, and Guvna B being the more serious, level headed of the pair, and Barney Artist, Max, and Rev. Chris… being like Ollie.
