WMG / Tales from the Darkside

Go To

The phone call Duncan receives in "I'll Give You a Million" was actually from the Devil and not from Jack's maid.

Earlier in the episode, Duncan Williams explained the terms of the soul-purchasing contract to Jack Blaine, where if Duncan were to meet foul play of any kind, all moneys would be repaid to his estate alongside the highest interest allowed by current law in 1984. When Jack eventually dies from his liver cancer, the Devil enacts his plan to get both men's souls. The wind coming from the closed window, the house being ransacked and Jack's soul arriving to finalize the deal played a big role in Duncan's fatal heart attack near the end of the episode. The late-night phone call played a significant role, too, coming from Jack's maid Jenny, in which we find out that not only did Jack die earlier in the day, but his body was cremated. But it wasn't really Jenny that made the call... it was the Devil himself.

The clatter of objects being searched through stops right before Duncan's house phone rings. Important to note that when the wind woke up Duncan, he tried to make a phone call to Jack, not knowing his friend was dead... but his house phone wasn't working. Once Duncan is made aware of Jack's fate by 'Jenny', the clatter resumes, and Duncan's phone goes dead once more. 'Jenny' also drops a major clue that she isn't what she appears to be when commenting to Duncan that "The storm's full of demons tonight, sir".
