They're not far off from the cod moratorium (1992) as it is. It'd be a farther stretch to the secularization of the Newfoundland school system (1997, five or so years after Mark graduated) but might be worthwhile to show its' effects on Sister Rose and having Mark and Cara at the same high school. Mark and Fox will eventually see a Relationship Upgrade.
Melissa Royle Critch, the author's real-life wife, is an auburn-headed Statuesque Stunner. They didn't meet until they were adults, of course, but the show does bend reality 'til it squeaks on occasion for the sake of entertainment. Fox could be an amalgam of Melissa and Sherrie Windsor, Critch's ex-partner.
