* In a world of dying magic, this young, intelligent woman was a prodigy student at a magic school, renowned in her studies, research and accomplishments. Even with this, she would always lend a helping hand to her best friend, who tended to struggle more often. When her friend is chosen to take on a great magical responsibility, she tries desperately to make sure her friend understands the significance and severity of this role, giving her friend an upgrade to her magic talent in the process. Said friend fails the quest due to carelessness and focus on mere tricks, even damaging the moon, yet this girl is the one presented as the bad guy for trying to keep her friend on track and wanting magic to be preserved. Upon growing up, she returns to her beloved school as a teacher, and poses new and efficient means of powering magic, compared to the finite traditional method that significantly disadvantages the working class. She's even a good teacher, and a lot more laid-back and encouraging than other more conservative and strict teachers in the school. [[spoiler: Croix Meridies, ''[[Anime/LittleWitchAcademia2017 Little Witch Academia]]'']]
* A sickly woman with chronic pain and a weak constitution seeks a cure for her condition. Growing up, her parents had long spent their fortune on finding a doctor that could heal her, but nothing ever worked. Even though she's constantly in pain, she's worked hard to make herself stronger, but [[HardWorkHardlyWorks none of her efforts pay off in a way that makes her body tougher]]. In fact, she only gets frailer. She does find a bodyguard and a job at a museum, even the opportunity for a cure...but it just slips her by, and she's left significantly injured. Not only does she break over half of her bones, but she is slammed, hard, into a wall with a baseball bat. [[spoiler: Mera Salamin, ''WebAnimation/EpithetErased'']]
* An environmentalist, animal-loving man with psychic powers he uses to hear the thoughts of his beloved dragon friends and [[HealingHands heal them when they are injured]]. His motivation is protecting his non-human friends, and fighting against pollution and industrialization that harms the local wildlife. The protagonist even considers that he has a genuine point about the harm humans do, yet how is he repaid for his efforts to make the world a better place? He is electrocuted in the air, and in every appearance afterwards, he still has trauma from the girl who took him down. [[spoiler: Lance, ''Manga/PokemonAdventures'']]
* His only fault was to love too much. [[spoiler: Ashfur, ''Literature/WarriorCats'', buckets and buckets of white paint provided by Yellowfang. Hey, it's obvious, but I couldn't help myself with how funny it is that all I need is a single, infamous sentence.]]

** And, finally, in the third route, he is beaten to death by the now-swordzombie protagonist in a futile attempt to stop said 'hero' from killing a baby and destroying the Holy Grail. This is particularly cruel as he had, not four days ago, saved the lives of the protagonist, his little sister, and his love interest, before fighting off a legendary assassin and a Complete Monster of a magus made of flesh-eating rape worms AFTER having his heart crushed by said assassin.
