Unfortunately,the scholar's regressive way of thinking rubbed off on several of the crew, who betrayed their kind commanding officer for a self-righteous historian who wanted to live out a savior fantasy. Heartbroken but nonetheless steadfast, the Commander was determined to do what he had to for the good of humanity. In response, the crazed scholar lead a revolt, slaughtered the commander's remaining allies, and then killed his surrogate father figure with a piece of the giant crystal.
