Something's wrong with the window...note
Windowkill is a Shoot 'Em Up game created by solo Indie developer torcado. It centers on an Interface Screw of the device you play on itself - the game's window is constantly closing in on you, and must be pushed outwards with your attacks.

The game was originally made for the Ludum Dare 54 game jam, in which it ranked second place overall. An updated version was released on Steam on February 23, 2024. It is available on both Windows and Linux.

Windowkill contains examples of:

  • A Dog Named "Dog": The bosses include a smiley face named Smiley, a wyrm named Wyrm, and a slime (eventually) named Slime.
  • all lowercase letters: Most of the text in-game is lowercase, including the window titles. The main exceptions are the credits and the game's title screen logo.
  • Anti-Frustration Features: Dragging the windows for the Peer or Drain perks will drastically slow down time until you release them, allowing you to focus on repositioning instead of dodging.
  • Asteroids Monster:
    • The Wyrm boss is a chain of eyes that will split into different chains if you kill one of the segments in its middle.
    • Slimest is a Blob Monster boss that splits into three Slimers, which then split into three Slimes each.
  • The Computer Shall Taunt You: The Orb Array selects an area of the screen and takes a screenshot that deals damage if you're inside it. If the attack lands, you can find the screenshot it took in a folder titled "cringe_compilation".
  • Co-Op Multiplayer: The game's 3.0 update added local co-op with an unlimited amount of players.
  • Roguelike: The bosses and enemies you face are random, and death will send you back to the beginning of the game. The only sort of progression between runs is unlocking new characters via specific achievements.
  • Shout-Out: Smiley's face is one to the "YOU ARE AN IDIOT" computer virus. A secret white variant of the boss reinforces this by using a far closer color scheme.
