Vault 83: The Librarian PS4 XB1 PC is a short but interesting quest mod centering around two new locations near the upper outskirts of Boston: The Akashic Library and Vault 83. While exploring the eastern coastline of the Commonwealth the Sole Survivor comes across a lone intact building sitting forlornly in the middle of the wasteland. Inside is a strange woman known only as The Librarian who is looking for someone to recover something very precious to her from a nearby vault...

  • Abandoned Laboratory: One that dabbled in teleportation which led to the creation of a portal leading straight into the Institute, a small section of which serves as another abandoned laboratory.
  • Apocalyptic Log: Several notes and terminal entries give a lot of backstory to the inhabitants of Vault 83 and reveal that some sort of attack and emergency evacuation happened in the recent past, resulting in its current state and appearance. Digging a bit further reveals that an unwitting scientist accidentally opened a portal to the Institute, which led to Vault 83 being overrun by Synths seeking the secrets to their advanced teleportation technology.
  • Bookworm: The Librarian, of course. Impressively, she has managed to completely restore an entire buildings worth of books and keeps them all in excellent condition.
  • Driven to Suicide: Some of corpses the player finds suggest that a few residents committed suicide rather than face an army of invading Synths.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: Vault 83 is completely empty save for a large number of Synth infiltrators and is filled with lots of hints that suggest something BAD went down here recently, enough so to cause the entire population to immediately evacuate. It's pretty creepy at times. Of course, the Vault 83 of the past is much worse, due to lacking the people that should be there and the fact that it's clean and pristine looking, making it feel very alien.
  • Shout-Out: The front desk terminal at the library references several famous video game characters and authors in its book return and check-out entries. Each book on the list ties the two people together through a similar subject. For example Nathan Drake and Lara Croft are interested in books about their profession.
  • Time Travel: The experiments done in Vault 83 seems to have opened a small hole in the space time continuum that leads to a strange past version of the vault trapped between moments with access cut off to the early dwellers. It's pretty weird.
  • Treasure Room: Unlocking all of the doors and completing the entire story will reward the player with a password for the Overseer's terminal, which unlocks a storage room filled with supplies, including a full suit of power armor.
  • Zerg Rush: The Institute sent a large army of Synths to storm Vault 83 to steal their advanced teleportation technology for their own use. While exploring the Sole Survivor will typically be attacked by groups of 3-5 Synths every other time they enter a new room or area, including a rush of around a dozen when they arrive at the Institute itself.
