A minimalist city builder
Islanders is a casual strategy/simulation hybrid game developed and published by Grizzly Studios and first released for Steam on April 4, 2019. The game is a variation of the typical city-building simulation game with a causally-oriented form of gameplay. The player begins on several islands of various themes and has to place buildings down on the islands in an order that would get the fastest city growth. Points come from placing building or structures together that are relevant to each other. The game ends if the player runs out of buildings or space to build more before unlocking more islands.

The game would later release on consoles with the moniker Islanders: Console Edition. The first console release would be on Nintendo Switch on August 11, 2021.

The following tropes are built on these islands:

  • Casual Video Game: Grizzly developed this game as an alternative to more general and in-depth city-building simulators.
  • Critical Existence Failure: If you run out of buildings to place or space to put buildings, the game ends.
  • Endless Game: Subverted for a game of this genre. You can actually get a Game Over if you ever run out of buildings to place or spaces to build a new building.
  • Simulation Game: A very unique twist on a game of this genre since it is fast-paced and aimed at a casual audience along with having a real-time strategy element.
