Mario finds himself in a dark abandoned mansion.

Game.bps is a short horror-themed ROM hack of Super Mario World by a user named Wakana. The plot isn't too complicated - Mario ends up in a haunted mansion, and he needs to escape. Seems simple, but this mansion is quite different from the usual fare one would expect from a Mario game...

Will you be able to read the tropes before time consumes you?

  • Action Game, Quiet Drama Scene: Inverted. While most of the game is quiet (and the times it isn't, it's played for horror), the final boss is fought to a blood-pumping remix of "The End of 1000 Years", of all things.
  • Anti-Frustration Features: The game is kind enough to have powerups respawn once you leave the room, meaning you won't be one hit away from death most of the time. Averted slightly when they disappear once you have the key to escape the mansion, but at that point there's not much left to do anyway.
  • Bloodier and Gorier: Official Mario games wouldn't be caught dead using blood. This game is more comfortable with using it, what with red-stained floors and spikes, bloody Dry Bones corpses, Big Boos with blood leaking out of their eyes, the Mario copies you occasionally run into...
  • Boss Corridor: Before facing the final boss, Mario runs down a short corridor that gets darker the further he goes in.
  • Checkpoint Starvation: The game features no checkpoints whatsoever: die at any point, and it's back to the start for you.
  • Death Throws: As with the source material, Mario dies like this. Unlike the source material though, Mario's face becomes blue and sickly while a Scare Chord plays.
  • Family-Unfriendly Violence: Besides being Bloodier and Gorier, copies of Mario with exposed spines probably wouldn't fly in an official Mario game. Neither would the victim from MARIO.
  • Hold the Line: The Lift room has Mario avoiding Boos until he's carried up to a door by the lift.
  • Jump Scare: The game is fairly fond of these - in particular, the "lose a life" jingle has been changed to a much more louder and creepier noise. There's also the Tortures Room changing after grabbing the broken key, Flowey's laugh playing in the Dinner Room, the victim from MARIO showing up before the final boss...
  • Losing Your Head: The Charging Chuck enemies don't have heads, but they're just as efficient in chasing after Mario.
  • Marathon Level: The entire game is more or less this, consisting of one long level that has no checkpoints.
  • Monochrome Apparition: A number of enemies are a light, pale blue, such as Koopas and Swoopers. Oddly averted by the Boos, which are proper ghost enemies.
  • Nightmare Face:
  • Scare Chord: The sound that plays when you die is one of these.
  • Shout-Out: The victim from MARIO shows up right before the final boss, and is present in the background for the fight.
  • Spikes of Doom: Spikes litter the ground (and ceiling) in a number of places, notably the Tower.
  • A Winner Is You: Once Mario has escaped the mansion, you get to romp around a small outside area with a congratulatory message from the hack's creator hanging overhead.
