* DeathThrows: As with the source material, Mario dies like this. Unlike the source material though, Mario's face becomes blue and sickly while a ScareChord plays.

->Mario finds himself in a dark abandoned mansion.

''[[https://www.smwcentral.net/?p=section&a=details&id=14607 Game.bps]]'' is a short [[{{Horror}} horror-themed]] [[GameMod ROM hack]] of ''VideoGame/SuperMarioWorld'' by a user named Wakana. The plot isn't too complicated - Mario ends up in a haunted mansion, and he needs to escape. Seems simple, but this mansion is quite different from the usual fare one would expect from a Mario game...

!!Will you be able to read the tropes before time consumes you?
* [[ActionFilmQuietDramaScene Action Game, Quiet Drama Scene]]: Inverted. While most of the game is quiet (and the times it isn't, it's played for [[JumpScare horror]]), [[spoiler:the final boss is fought to a blood-pumping remix of "[[VideoGame/MeltyBlood The End of 1000 Years]]", of all things.]]
* AntiFrustrationFeatures: The game is kind enough to have powerups respawn once you leave the room, meaning you won't be one hit away from death most of the time. Averted slightly when they disappear once [[spoiler:you have the key to escape the mansion]], but at that point there's not much left to do anyway.
* BloodierAndGorier: Official Mario games wouldn't be caught dead using blood. This game is more comfortable with using it, what with red-stained floors and spikes, bloody Dry Bones corpses, Big Boos with [[TearsOfBlood blood leaking out of their eyes]], [[spoiler:the Mario copies you occasionally run into]]...
* BossCorridor: [[spoiler:Before facing the final boss, Mario runs down a short corridor that gets darker the further he goes in.]]
* CheckpointStarvation: The game features no checkpoints whatsoever: die at any point, and it's back to the start for you.
* FamilyUnfriendlyViolence: Besides being BloodierAndGorier, [[spoiler:copies of Mario with exposed spines]] probably wouldn't fly in an official Mario game. [[spoiler:Neither would the [[Fanfic/MARIOByMARIO victim from MARIO]].]]
* HoldTheLine: The Lift room has Mario avoiding Boos until he's carried up to a door by the lift.
* JumpScare: The game is fairly fond of these - in particular, the "lose a life" jingle has been changed to a much more louder and creepier noise. There's also [[spoiler:the Tortures Room changing after grabbing the broken key]], [[VideoGame/{{Undertale}} Flowey's laugh]] playing in the Dinner Room, [[spoiler:the [[Fanfic/MARIOByMARIO victim from]] ''[[Fanfic/MARIOByMARIO MARIO]]'' showing up before the final boss]]...
* LosingYourHead: The Charging Chuck enemies don't have heads, but they're just as efficient in chasing after Mario.
* MarathonLevel: The entire game is more or less this, consisting of one long level that has no checkpoints.
* MonochromeApparition: A number of enemies are a light, pale blue, such as Koopas and Swoopers. Oddly averted by the Boos, which are proper ghost enemies.
* NightmareFace:
** Lose a life, and Mario's face will become twisted as he [[DeathThrows falls off of the screen]].
** [[spoiler:Victim #1, as per the [[Fanfic/MARIOByMARIO source material]].]]
* ShoutOut: [[spoiler:The victim from ''[[Fanfic/MARIOByMARIO MARIO]]'' shows up right before the final boss, and is present in the background for the fight.]]
* SpikesOfDoom: Spikes litter the ground (and ceiling) in a number of places, notably the Tower.
* AWinnerIsYou: [[spoiler:Once Mario has escaped the mansion, you get to romp around a small outside area with a congratulatory message from the hack's creator hanging overhead.]]
