But this world has a dark secret that may end up being its undoing.
Muffin Legends is a Role-Playing Game with elements of dungeon crawling. It is developed in RPG Maker MV by Confuzyon Studios with original art inspired by the works of Akira Toriyama.

A comet fell on the continent of Spice in the world of Cornucopia, drawing the attention of visitors from another world. The alien visitors quickly quarantine the entire continent and drive off the inhabitants, not wanting any organic life to come into contact with the comet.

Two weeks later, siblings Makoto and Makasarili "Maka" Mafin celebrate their graduation as they become "Muffin Knights", an elite vanguard for the Kingdom of Naan, the seat of government for the continent of Fornax. After their graduation, the graduates receive orders to investigate Spice. Upon arriving to Spice, the entire vanguard was wiped out. Maka and the Muffin Knights were taken away by Dehydross, a mysterious man who seems to have taken Spice under his control, leaving Makoto by himself to demoralize him.

With his sibling missing, Makoto begins a journey through the world of Cornucopia to stop Dehydross, meeting new friends along the way and learning the dark secrets that the world hides.

Muffin Legends is set to be the first part of a trilogy titled Fables of Fornax, with additional storylines coming as DLC.

     Main tropes

Muffin Legends provides examples of:

  • All in a Row: Your party members follow your party leader while in the overworld.
  • Armor-Piercing Attack: All Gun-type weapons (Handguns, Assault Rifles, and Shotguns) ignore the defense of the target and the stats of the user. Guns are useful weapons for characters with mediocre stat growths, if you want them to deal consistent damage.
    • Makoto's starting Boil Over skill, Piercing Strike, ignores the target's defense and deals damage based on his equipment attack strength.
  • Big Bad: Dehydross is this. Later on, his opponent Chartarum begins to rise in prominence to become a threat to our heroes as much as Dehydross.
  • Bleak Level: The continent of Cassava Cove/Black Mould Morass has been overrun with The Mould, turning most of the continent into a bleak wasteland full of poison swamps, dead forests, and fungus-covered hills.
  • Crutch Character: Get to Pain Rassis Prison as fast as possible and you can enter the dungeon at level 3. Pearl joins your party at level 5. Her offensive spells deal heavy damage to the enemies in the dungeon, usually resulting in a One-Hit Kill on them using a spell they are weak against.
  • Divided We Fall: The nations of Cornucopia have isolated themselves to the point that no exchange of technology and international trade has taken place for generations. One country has advanced to the equivalent of the 21st century information era, while another has advanced to an early industrial age. Poor Fornax has advanced the least, being stuck in pre-industrial times and basing their livelihood in agriculture and animal husbandry.
  • During the War: The world of Cornucopia was sucked into a conflict between Dehydross and The Salt, and Chartarum and The Mould. But this conflict is not the focus of the story.
  • Eagleland: The entire continent of Hamburghia is pretty much a pastiche of the United States of America in the early 21st century.
  • Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors: In addition to the standard RPG elements like fire and ice, there is the first set of opposing elements, Holy and Dark. To represent the conflict between The Mould and The Salt, there is a second set of opposing elements: Acid and Alkaline respectively.
  • Enfant Terrible: The strongest of the Bundt Bandits is Pound, who is a little boy.
  • Expy: With the character designs being inspired by the works of Akira Toriyama, there are resemblances of the characters to those in various Toriyama works:
    • Makoto is designed after the Hero from Dragon Quest XI with some influence from Super Saiyan Trunks.
    • Crisp heavily resembles Piccolo.
    • Sprout, the little boy who introduces you to the game's farming mechanic, is inspired by Krillin.
    • Carl Burger, the President of Hamburghia, is inspired by the President POW from Metal Slug.
  • Fantasy Counterpart Culture: The continent of Smörgåsbord is home to three humanoid races: the Orcs, the Ogres, and the Titans. Unlike most depictions of these humanoid races, they live peaceful lives like regular humans. Unfortunately, the entire continent is embroiled in a massive political scandal that has divided the three races. Each race is modeled after a real life historical culture:
    • The Orcs are a highly imperialistic race of military-minded warriors with customs reminiscent of late-19th to early-20th century Japan. The Orcs have oppressed the Titans greatly, resulting in severe tensions between the two races.
    • The Titans are the largest physically of the three races, averaging between 3 to 4 meters in height. The Titans are a laborer society of smiths and carpenters with customs reminiscent of late-19th to early-20th century America. Being oppressed by the Orcs and being forced into the smallest province of Smörgåsbord has made them have severe tensions with the Orcs.
    • The Ogres are an industrious race of machinists and mass producers of consumer goods with customs reminiscent of late-19th to early 20th-century Europe. The Ogres have remained neutral to the tensions between the Orcs and the Titans, and therefore focus on inter-province trade between their bordering provinces: the Titan province of Julskinka and the prosperous united province of Gravlax.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Remember the comet that crashed into Spice at the beginning of the game, which attracted Dehydross and The Salt to the planet in the first place, and made Chartarum rise in power? It's all Maka's fault.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Makoto initially meets Börek after the former was rescued from the failed Pepper Beach mission. They become fast and close friends, even though Börek is an old man and Makoto is a young recent graduate from the Muffin Knight Academy.
  • Limit Break: The Boil Over skills. Characters gain Boiling Points during combat, allowing them to use those points to perform powerful offensive moves or strong healing skills.
  • Mascot Mook: Flans and their variants. They are hated in-universe for being an extreme annoyance due to their weaponized cuteness.
  • Medieval Stasis: The continent of Fornax is the least technologically developed country in Cornucopia, being pre-industrial at most.
  • Percent Damage Attack: The Braise line of spells deals damage based on a percentage of the target's maximum HP. Naturally, these spells have a chance to fail. They are also useless against bosses.
  • Shout-Out:
    • When you win an enemy encounter, you will get the victory message: YOU'RE WINNER !
    • One of the quests you receive when you are recruiting new members in your party is named 'Oliver and Company'
    • Lemon's one-liner when you are about to fight him and his crew:
    • A late-game Cauldron Oliver can summon can regenerate MP for the entire party. One skill the Cauldron can cast on a party member to boost their Intelligence stat is called "Mystic Pizza".
  • Theme Naming: Just about everything in the game is named after food or a cooking technique.

Character tropes (WARNING: spoilers will be unmarked!)

The Party

     Makoto Mafin
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ml_makoto.JPG
I get to fight alongside Queen Pearl? Oh boy, this is getting more and more exciting!
Adventuring title: The Muffin Knight
A young man from Fornax who is a recent graduate of the Muffin Knights Academy. He lost his sibling, Makasarili Mafin, to Dehydross during a failed mission to investigate the comet that fell to Spice two weeks before.

Makoto's weapons of choice are swords, polearms, and crossbows.

  • Blade On A Stick: Makoto's Partisan specialization allows him to learn special skills that make use of polearms.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Makoto may let his naïvety say some really odd things, to the annoyance of Börek sometimes. He also has a very wide-eyed optimistic view on the world, given his youthful attitude. But when he needs to be, Makoto is a competent fighter and keeps a cool head.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Makoto starts off using a sword as his weapon of choice. He has an entire specialization that gives him additional skills and passives to improve his swordfighting.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: With Börek, who is an old man priest.
  • Jack of All Stats: Makoto has mostly good stat growths that give him decent health pools and a good Strength growth rate that makes him deal more damage as he levels up.
     Börek Choux

Oh bother...
Adventuring title: The High Priest
The head clergyman of the Great Church of Demeter's Bounty. He meets and joins Makoto shortly after the latter was rescued from Spice.

Börek's weapons of choice are rods, staves, and maces. His primary role in the party is the healer. He also has access to some support skills and some offensive Holy-element spells.

  • Authority Equals Asskicking: The head clergy of the church, but is experienced in the battlefield and a valuable party member early on as a healer.
  • Combat Medic: Before becoming the High Priest, Börek served as a combat healer in the Naan Army. He has access to various healing spells.
  • Expy: He resembles the Lord High Priest from Dragon Quest VIII. His shoulder pauldrons are inspired by World of Warcraft's priests who usually wear those pieces of armor.
  • High Priest: It is his job title as head clergy of the church. It also becomes his adventuring title later.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: With Makoto, who is a young graduate from the Muffin Knights Academy.
  • Only Sane Man: Börek has the least amount of emotional baggage out of everyone in the party. There are times he cannot deal with Makoto's immaturity and naïvety.
  • Punny Name: First name (pronounced "burr-ek") is a Turkish filled pastry made with phyllo sheets. Last name is a French pastry dough used to make things like éclairs.
  • Religion is Magic: Has spells like Demeter's Resolve, a Boil Over skill that resurrects all dead allies and heals the entire party.
  • Squishy Wizard: Börek's Intelligence and Wisdom stat growths are high, but his HP pool and Dexterity grow very slowly. He often ends up being the slowest member of the party and usually takes his turn last, even among the enemy.
  • Troll: Börek will not hesistate to pick on Makoto for his own amusement.
(After meeting his longtime friend Chop)
Chop: But, I must make one small request. For old time's sake, would you spar with me?
Börek: Of course, old friend! Makoto here would love to!
    (Beat)
    Makoto: Uh, what?
     Pearl Anadama
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ml_pearl.JPG
Ah, the life of a queen! All this work never seems to end!
Adventuring title: The Croissant Queen
The queen of the Naan Kingdom and wife of King Lodovico Anadama. Pearl was spearheading the Pain Rassis Prison investigation when she was kidnapped by Lemon in the chaos that ensued in Khamiri. She later joins the party to put an end to Lemon's threat to her and her family's safety.

Pearl serves as the party's black mage, having access to a multitude of elemental spells. She serves as the party's damage dealer.

  • Authority Equals Asskicking: She's a queen, a politician, and a statesman. But she is not afraid to take to the battlefield herself. She even breaks free from Lemon's captivity not long after she was kidnapped.
  • Lady of Black Magic: Pearl is the Black Mage of the party, specializing in offensive elemental magic.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: A Queen who's not afraid to take matters into her own hands on the frontlines.
  • Squishy Wizard: Pearl has one of the lowest HP totals out of everyone. Be sure to keep her healthy or increase her physical damage resistance somehow, or she'll be shredded by strong physical attacks.

Supporting Characters

     Makasarili "Maka" Mafin
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ml_maka.JPG
Oh, and call me "Makasarili" again, and I'll feed you to a group of Flans!
Maka's sibling, who graduated at the same time as Makoto from the Muffin Knights Academy. Maka and Makoto were ordered to Spice, but their vanguard unit was routed, and Maka was captured by Dehydross. It has become Makoto's primary goal to rescue Maka from the clutches of Dehydross.
     Chop

Antagonists

     The Bundt Bandits
     Dehydross
     Chartarum
     The instigator (MAJOR SPOILERS
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ml_makacorrupted.JPG
I'm tired of living in your shadow all the time, brother. I am SICK OF IT! I want to do what I want for a change!
Maka is solely responsible for bringing the conflict between The Salt and The Mould to Cornucopia. Maka has put the entire world in danger willingly, but they soon become lost forever once Chartarum has completely overtaken their mind.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Maka is the main reason why Dehydross and Chartarum, along with the entire conflict between The Salt and The Mould, came to Coruncopia.
  • Meaningful Name: Maka's full first name, Makasarili, is Filipino for "selfish". Why they summoned the comet to Cornucopia was out of pure selfishness. They had been always jealous of Makoto's superior aptitude in everything over them.
